Stevie Ray Vaughan nace el 3 de octubre de 1954 en el Hospital Metodista de Dallas, Texas. A la edad de 7 tiene su primera experiencia con una guitarra cuando le regalan una guitarra de juguete. En 1963 compra su primer disco, «Wham» de Lonnie Mack.
Stevie continúa tocando de manera semi-amateur hasta 1969, donde entra a la escena del blues en Austin, Texas. En el verano de 1970 forma su primera banda a largo plazo, los Blackbirds, con Stevie y Kim Davis en las guitarras, Christian dePlicque en la voz, Roddy Colonna & John Huff en la percusión, Noel Deis en los teclados y David Frame en el bajo. A finales de 1971 deja la secundaria y se muda a Austin con su banda, estableciendo su base en un club llamado «Hills Country Club». El único hecho merecedor de ser destacado en los próximos años es que en 1974 Stevie obtiene su destruida Stratocaster, la «Number One» que no dejaría por el resto de su carrera. Hasta 1977 participó de bandas como «The Nightcrawlers», «Paul Ray & The Cobras» (con la que ganó el premio a la banda del año en marzo de 1977) y «Triple Threat Revue».
Hacia septiembre de 1977 Stevie forma su banda definitiva, Double-Trouble (más conocida como Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double-Trouble), con Johnny Reno (saxofón), Jackie Newhouse (bajo) y Fredde Pharoah (batería),(enrique peña vázquez)(guitarra numero uno). Se movieron dentro del estado de Texas hasta el 19 de agosto de 1979, cuando tocaron en el San Francisco Blues Festival.

The best concert that I have ever seen, hands down, was Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble playing with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The encore was Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan playing the song "Pipeline" on a double neck guitar. Wow! SRV was definitely the best guitar player that I have ever seen.
