Steven Siro Vai, guitarrista y compositor estadounidense. Vai es conocido principalmente por sus composiciones, actuaciones y producciones de música instrumental de guitarra, pero además ha participado en grabaciones de otros muchos artistas del rock. Es considerado uno de los principales guitarristas eléctricos, y un revolucionario dentro del rock instrumental.
En su juventud, Vai se interesó en grandes del rock como Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper y Led Zeppelin que fomentó su interés en aprender guitarra. Antes de ingresar a la Berklee College of Music, Vai tomó lecciones con el guitarrista en ascenso Joe Satriani y tocó en muchas bandas locales. Durante este tiempo adquiría la influencia de guitarristas como Jeff Beck y el guitarrista de fusión Allan Holdsworth.
Steve Vai conquistó el reconocimento general tocando como guitarrista del legendario músico, productor y magnate Frank Zappa.
A principios de los 80 abandonó la banda de Zappa y grabó su primer disco como solista, «Flex-Able», y reemplazó a Yngwie J. Malmsteen como guitarra solista en Alcatrazz. Entonces se unió al antiguo «front-man» de Van Halen, David Lee Roth para grabar dos álbumes, «Eat them and smile» y «Skyscraper», además de una versión en español del primero titulada «Sonrisa salvaje».

I think it's very possible Vai is a nightmare to work with. I've seen instances in interviews where he comes across as an asshole but he is a virtuoso. And has said so himself that he's a control freak. Anyway, hope he decides to drop ths 'Real Illusions' stuff and employ a decent singer if there is to be singing on the next record.
