Stephen Richard Hackett (nacido en Pimlico, Gran Bretaña, 12 de febrero de 1950, multifacetico y ambicioso guitarrista (así fue como lo calificaron su ex compañeros de Genesis). De hecho es bien conocido en en mundo del rock como el creador de la técnica Tapping en guitarra eléctrica. Esto es porque Hackett conocía y dominaba las técnicas más avanzadas de guitarra clásica.
Comenzó a tocar en bandas como Canterbury Glass, Steel Pier y Sarabande; pero su primera incursión en el mundo de la grabación fue cuando ingresó en la banda Quiet World en 1970, la cual editó un álbum en ese mismo año titulado The Road.
Ese mismo año, ingreso en Genesis a través de anuncios clasificados, dando por consiguiente la clásica y mejor formación del grupo. Con Hackett grabarían 8 álbumes.
En 1978, buscando más libertad dado que la banda le restringía, el guitarrista abandona la banda para iniciar su carrera como solista, aunque ya tres años antes había editado «Voyage of the acolyte», su primer disco como solista y en el que le acompañaban sus colegas Phil Collins y Mike Rutherford.
Fue esta primera obra «Voyage of the acolyte», (considerada como una de sus obras maestras), uno de los desencadenantes de sus desavenencias dentro del grupo Genesis, ya que sus compañeros le reprochaban ( y no sin razon) que se hubiera «reservado» todo este material de indudable calidad, para el solo.
