Below the Salt was a hand-me-down from my hippie folks. Maddy Prior has the voice of a heavenly angel.

Have you heard Steeleye Dan yet?

Conversation I recently had: "I'm really into British folk like Steeleye Span." "I like Steely Dan too, but I don't think they are British and I wouldn't call them folk."

I always feel rather elfish when listening to this. I rather like that feeling. Below the Salt is a great album!

Check out Malicorne, especially "Almanach". I like to say they were the french Steeleye Span. They had a darker feeling and more prog structures though.

I've heard very few Celtic songs that I like anywhere near as much as Steeleye Span. I don' t know if it is because they are catchier or rock harder than other groups, or something else. Any recommendations for similar artists or songs that can match Steeleye?

"Fighting For Strangers" gets pretty grim by the time it's through.

"Sir James the Rose" and "Two Butchers" are about murder. "Allison Gross" is about a witch, although it's humorous. "Jack Hall" has gallows humor.

"Boys of Bedlam" and "Twa Corbies" are about as dark as it gets lyrics wise, and Steeleye Span add a lot of atmosphere too. "Sheep Crook and Black Dog" is good too.

  • magicalsushi favourite tracks are dark ones such as Long Lankin, Little Sir Hugh and You Will Burn, or dark-sounding ones such as Cam Ye O'er Frae France, Gaudete or Lovely On The Water. Can anyone recommend more Span tracks similar to these?

  • ultimate60s At festivals, why not have a FAF-themed singaround? Nick Griffin challenged Billy Bragg on BBC News during the recent election to sing “a proper folk song, like the Blackleg Miner”, implying that only BNP propagandists know anything about folk music. We want to make The Blackleg Miner our festival anthem, so if you’re running a singaround or you’re just singing at one, why not sing it? And be sure to tell people why!

In 1972, I bought a SS album for the first girlfriend of my life. She was into traditional folk music. Neither of us had ever heard of SS or any of their music. Unfortunately, my love of SS lasted while my love of this girlfriend did not. However I did get lucky and remained in love with the better one of the two choices. Great music and Great memories!

My father had a sleu of SS records. He introduced me to these when I was 4, and I've loved them ever since....They always make me feel young again! I try to introduce them to people I meet.....even though it never works. I will always love SS, until I die.
