Stars Of The Lid son un dúo de Austin (Texas), formado por Adam Wiltzie y Brian McBride, que bien podría considerarse único en su género, el de la música. O, al menos, en su naturaleza: esa que desde mediados de los noventa -debutaron con ‘Music For Nitrous Oxide’ (Sedimental, 95)- les lleva a crear contextos sonoros de carácter minimalista, efímero y atmosférico. También pausados, propiedad esta que se extrapola a su producción discográfica de un tiempo a esta parte. Concretamente, a partir del cambio de siglo.
Dos son las características sonoras principales de Stars Of The Lid, el ambient (siempre que no se entienda este como simple música de fondo) y los drones. Y dos son los requisitos necesarios a la hora de afrontarlas: tiempo por delante y paciencia para sumergirse y flotar en su parsimoniosa inmensidad. Ello significa dejar de lado definiciones y encasillamientos, ya que en este caso una imagen -la de un iceberg desplazándose lentamente por el mar- sirve mejor que cualquier conjunción de palabras (complicada, en todo caso, de encontrar). Pero, al mismo tiempo, implica desenterrar todo un torrente de emociones -de la melancolía al drama- y sensaciones -de la calma al desasosiego.
Una música inexplicable y austeramente bella en la que nada parece pasar, inmóvil en apariencia; falsa visión que se rompe hecha añicos después de un análisis, temporal (a lo largo de sus distintos lanzamientos) y transversal (dentro de las propias canciones: estas nunca están quietas por mucho que lo parezcan; ponte unos cascos y verás), de una discografía repleta de logros impresionantes y sobrecogedores.
