Soul Coughing fueron un conjunto único formado en Nueva York en 1992. Fue un grupo de culto, post-grunge, el favorito entre oyentes más puristas gracias a sus potentes directos con grandes influencias del jazz. El antiguo crítico musical, poeta y vocalista Mike (alias de M.) Doughty reunió al grupo mientras trabajaba en el proyecto experimental Knitting Factory. En menos de un año, la banda firmó con Slash Records de Warner Brothers y editaron tres CD de gran éxito: «Ruby Vroom» (1994), «Irresistible Bliss» (1996) y «El Oso» (1998). Soul Coughing se separaron finalmente en el año 2000.
