so... I'm glad we agree on the topic and now we should presume to the wait for another album... and I'm wondering what musical / lyrical direction it will show.

On Fleurs she shows some amazing composition/instrumentation skills; some of the songs are just brilliant in their thematic development. The lyrics are pretty "whatever" for me, but the music is some of her most well composed (though there are some tracks I don't care for) That being said, her earlier stuff has a very "magical" quality (especially Todeswunch and the Dead Lovers Sarabande) that her more recent releases lack, which are excellent, but they do feel like someone composed them. The aforementioned releases really sound like they were chanelled through Anna-Varney by spirits..... because I can't imagine a human creating them; they're so truly otherworldly. Les Fleurs du Mal is good music, but it's mortal music.... and I think that that is finally all I have to say on the matter.

well, Le Fleur is not a bad album. it's the one I was beggining with and it got me curious 'bout Anna so it cannot be utter shit. but saying things like 'this is the masterpiece of AVC, no one got higher like LFDM, Bach, Chopin and Verdi suck balls in comparison" is totally silly. besides, exploring more and more recent stuff of SA made me like the project a lot more since after the recent lp I was like it could be an okay thing 2 listen 2 once a month/year. even the folk-influenced first releases seem to me really interesting works (Todeswunsch is simply amazing!) which is weird since the albums have relatively poor production and sumtimes sound a bit "unfinished", but yet this shows Varney is constantly improving her skills. my favorite SA is Dead Lovers / Inverted Womb, still.

"I have many years listening the old ones (the great ones) so, something fresh is not bad at all.." --> @ Totentraum: Yes, that's my situation too. My "problem" with that album is not the music itself, which has some truly gifted moments, but the lyrics. The lyrics aren't important on a few bands out there, but in the case of Sopor Aeternus, I've always felt connected with them, somehow. And they were a complement to the music. So, playing "Les Fleurs du Mal" and start listening about sexual desires, written in a sort of mundane and ordinary way I felt disappointed. And yet, I'm starting to truly enjoy the album, despite the lyrical content. I'm now curious to see with what will Anna Varney come up with in the next album.

@Totentraum: Yeah, I basically agree. I'm really curious what possible future releases will be like. I think she can only extend the Fleurs persona for so long before it starts to become false. But only she can know such a thing.......

No, the Difference is that "Les Fleurs du Mal" is a good album, but is not the same sopor aeternus that we really like. And obviously is not the best album for many here. Is a "new" album too, in my case, I have many years listening the old ones (the great ones) so, something fresh is not bad at all... And definelly the charts are made by the scroblings of @Sopor6 :P

I'm perplexed that a lot of people on the shoutbox seem to not like Les Fleurs du Mal, yet it dominates the charts somehow.

One of my fav gothic bands. All releases up to 2004 was something truly original and unique. I even bought La Chambre D'Echo CD book, but did it purely because of the amazing artworks done by genius Joachim Luetke. All the rest of materials counting La Chambre was (excuse me SA fans) plane crap. The way I feel it is since 2004 Varney has lost that unique spirit in the sound, became more of official as if <<what a greatness of our queen of gothic...>> what's the point of taking all the fame on oneself if the music was played by the whole BAND which is * of others (I won't list credits here). And what's that shit with chocolate condom as extra in edition? What is it, a gothic pop, lol ? I truly regret that our beautiful, wonderful, amazing, absolutely genius blah blah blah fall into dotage. No hate, but the 'ensamble' of singers performed Shawodsphere II, Feralia Genitalia, Hades Pluton and many other songs as well as musicians during each sessions deserves not less attention.

There's nothing wrong with comparing, and any opinion that someone holds is valid if they're being true to their feeling.

(brilliant work of music since BACH) hahahaha please... we have to recognice the absolute talent of A. Varney (I do,i'm a big fan) , but seriously... you cannot compare a great artist to a classical (baroque) MASTER!!. And this is more funny if you talk about "Les Fleurs Du Mal" and her hemorrhoids and repressed sexuality bullshit.

~Les Fleurs Du Mal~ is the most brilliant work of music since BACH! Anna is a true artist that is why she takes a topic and turns it in a story! She never makes the same work from life death to love its LIFE!!
