Kemi, Finlandia (1999 – presente)
Sonata Arctica es una banda de power metal proveniente de la ciudad de Kemi, Finlandia.
La banda fue fundada bajo el nombre de Tricky Beans y en sus inicios tocaban canciones fuertemente influidas por el género rock and roll, las cuales no tenían mucho que ver con su actual estilo, el power metal. Al principio de su carrera, grabaron 3 demos que nunca fueron enviados a ningún sello discográfico - Friend ‘till The End, Agre Pamppers y PeaceMaker…
En 1997 la banda pasó a llamarse Tricky Means, y desde ese momento hasta 1999 su estilo fue cambiando hasta hacerlo de manera drástica, enfatizando en las melodías de teclado y confiando en una línea claramente distinguible en el Bajo y la guitarra. El vocalista Tony Kakko desarrolló un estilo propio para cantar basado en el falsete y las voces de tenor.
En 1999, la banda grabó un demo titulado FullMoon, compuesto por Tony Kakko, el guitarrista Jani Liimatainen, el bajista Janne Kivilahti y el batería Tommy Portimo. El demo fue enviado al sello Spinefarm y la banda cambió definitivamente su nombre a Sonata Arctica. Un contrato de grabación llegó poco después.
Más tarde ese mismo año fue lanzado en Finlandia el primer single del grupo, titulado UnOpened, el cual provocó un gran impacto, entrando en los 20 más vendidos en su primera semana tras salir a la venta.

Yeah, Coen's right :) The guy's name is Nick Van-Eckmann. For some reason I always thought he did the part: "Everything lives, everything dies. Now I know the legends only lived in his lies." on The Ruins of my Life, but I'm glad I checked because I can't find credits for him doing that anywhere in the sleeve O.o Don't know where I got that idea, guess it just sounds like him (though it still could be him, but not credited). He also did "...Of Silence", of course, and the part "forced me to love you" in Last Drop Falls. Love that guy. I had no idea he was Tony's teacher! :D If that's indeed the case, that's awesome! :D
