Red Hot Chili Peppers es un grupo de California fundado en 1983 que combina funk y rock. Es otro de los grupos de rock que despuntaron en los 90, atravesaron varias barreras musicales y fueron muy originales, creando su propio estilo de música de rock explosivo. Red Hot Chili Peppers se formó en el contexto de una cultura underground nacida a principios de los 80 en California, que se caracterizaba por la recuperación de los grandes clásicos del funky y por una incipiente cultura del hip hop. Los Red Hot Chili Peppers no saltaron a la fama hasta llevar ya un buen número de conciertos a sus espaldas y una ganada reputación fuera de los circuitos comerciales.
La primera canción que crearon fue «
Out in L.A.», compuesta por Kiedis (Anthony paso toda la noche componiéndola porque quería sorprender al resto del grupo). La formación original era Kiedis en voz, Flea en bajo, Slovak en guitarra e Irons en batería (actualmente milita en Pearl Jam). Tras varias semanas componiendo y tocando temas, la banda se encuentra con un puñado suficiente como para grabar una demo (música)|demo en un cassette, sin embargo no tenían un sitio donde la acústica fuera aceptable y no se disparase de precio para los bolsillos de unos jóvenes estudiantes. Flea, que también tocaba en una banda llamada «Fear» como batería, conocía un lugar donde podían grabar a un precio barato. Cuando grabaron la demo incluyeron temas como «Out in L.A.» , «Green Heaven» y «You Always Sing the Same». Así paso el tiempo, mientras la banda le hacia escuchar la demo a cualquiera que quisiera escucharla.
