25 Mar 2010, 5:35 de Semprini12Sat 13 Mar – Woods, Real Estate, Valleys
Before Saturday night’s show at Club Lambi featuring Valleys, Real Estate, and Woods, I was curious about something. How many people would Real Estate and Woods pull in, in the former’s first trip to Montreal? As it said on Facebook, the tickets were selling fast and that proved to be true given the turn out last night, as the venue was packed.
The show began with Montreal’s own Valleys, supporting their 2009 album, Sometimes Water Kills People. The psychedelic trio played for a good forty-five minutes, and really showed us how experimental music should be played as they cranked out one strong effort after another, including album highlights such as “Santiago,” “Killer Legs,” finally ending with “The Heavy Dreamer,” which seemed a good fit to close the set, changing the pace a little bit from the slower songs before it. With the use of sweet and subtle vocal harmonies and by stressing the importance of distinction between each song, Valleys’ performance was almost flawless.

Best album of 2009
PENS - Hey Friend! What You Doing?
We're making this our album of the year because in the first draft of this list we had included not less than 6 songs from the record and just couldn't pick one track. We simply can't stop listening to songs like Freddie, 1-2, Hide The Kids, Yeah Baby! I'll Take You to Bagel Town, Networking and High In The Cinema. In the twenty-nine minutes the album lasts, it is as if PENS manage to capture all the films of Larry Clark and Harmony Korine and distill them into insanely perfect pop songs. And while every other band this year seemed to take great effort in trying to sound unconsciously noisy, DIY and lo-fi the PENS just did. And they did it brilliantly.

27 Dic 2009, 7:38 de CaptainGaylordI remember most of the top album lists last year started out with music snob crap like "well it was a pretty lousy year for music, but i guess SOME good things came out." 2008 wasn't a goldmine, but come on - a lot of good stuff came out! Granted, the albums by TV on the Radio, Portishead, Cut Copy, Elbow, and the like were all ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE, but some stuff didn't suck! Like that Coldplay album. Boy oh boy, wasn't THAT a gem!
There's no arguing that this year was abundant with great music. In fact, I wanted to just make a list of 20 or 25, but I just couldn't do it. Even 50 was hard for me! Anyway, without further rambling, here is my top albums list for 2009. I must warn you in advance though that it is quite long, and if you really want to sit and read all about what some random guy on the internet thinks about the year in music when it's such a beautiful day outside, well.. it's your life.
50. Röyksopp - Junior
