  • 40 Questions About 50 Top Artists - 16/11/14

    25 Nov 2014, 1:18 de pogoshrooms

Okay, so I'm doing this with my top 50 artists of the last month, rather than my top 50 overall.

1 // What was the first song you heard by 22 (Ataxia)?
    'Dust'.

2 // How did you get into 31 (Cat Stevens)?
JF covered 'How Can I Tell You' a lot of times, live with the Chili Peppers, also he said Teaser and the Firecat was one of his favourite ever albums. I listened to it on the train home to London a few weeks ago and it is so damn good.

3 // What is your favorite lyric by 29 (Muse)?
I like the lyrics of 'Time Is Running Out' because there are so many words with the letter "r" in them, and Matt Bellamy can't pronounce them properly.

4 // What is your favorite album by 47 (Joy Division)?
Unknown Pleasures, I know it's really predictable but I have a jumper with the album cover on it and y'know, it's a comfy jumper.

5 // How many albums by 9 (Arctic Monkeys) do you own?
Two. The most recent and the least recent.

  • I stopped listening to music

    21 Sep 2014, 8:16 de vickevlar

I inherited a lot of music I still love dearly from my parents: R.E.M., Phil Ochs, John Prine, Simon & Garfunkel, Leo Kottke, Patti Smith, Peter Lang, Warren Zevon, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, way too much to possibly list. When I was a kid, I didn't understand why my parents rarely listened to any of it. If my dad ever listened to music, it was mostly through individual songs on youtube. In high school, I asked him if he ever felt the desire to put on an album and just sit and listen intently to it. He said no. I couldn't imagine feeling that way.

Music kind of drained out of my life this year. First, I actually started dating someone. Turns out other people require (and deserve) your attention, who knew. Next, I finished grad school. Here's another inspired revelation: school is the best time you will ever have to explore the world on your own terms. You even get to define the world! Then I moved to another state to do a shitty internship in order to advance my "career. …

Dopecopper, a smalltime Baltimore crust punk outlet, were introduced to me as an opening act for UK punk band the Subhumans at a local Baltimore venue. Having seen them perform, I immediately bought Sadistic Intent on cassette for a measly five bucks from their merch table. This, Dopecopper’s first EP, was released through Grimoire Records, an independent Baltimore label specializing in extreme variations of punk and metal, and is the greatest thing I’ve come across in the realm of heavy, noisy rock in quite a while. The entire EP is unhaltingly loud, consuming your mindscape with rapid, immense, furious riffage and just enough melody in all the right places. These guys make an absolutely gruesome amount of noise from beginning to end on this record, without becoming tedious or uninteresting. The vocalist, credited only as Grey, screams with crisp aggression and spits out brutal truths with tight flow and unyielding passion…

  • R.E.M. Day

    10 Mar 2014, 9:58 de cybrarian

On 11 March 1991 an album was released that would launch a new chapter in my musical life, and inspire in me a devotion to one band. The band was R.E.M.; the album was Out of Time. To celebrate its 23rd birthday, I’m going to be spending tomorrow listening to the entire R.E.M. back catalogue, in order, from Chronic Town to Collapse Into Now. Studio albums only, mind – I’ll be ignoring the various best-ofs and Dead Letter Office.

There will be highs (almost everything) and no doubt lows (*cough* Around The Sun) and I might just go crazy before I’m done – largely because I intend to write up each album in turn, which will probably result in lengthy essays on Murmur and Reckoning and about a dozen garbled words on Accelerate and Collapse Into Now.

As a quick reminder, the order of service will be as follows:

    Chronic Town (1982)
    Murmur (1983)
    Reckoning (1984)
    Fables of the Reconstruction (1985)
    Lifes Rich Pageant (1986)
    Document (1987)
    Green (1988)
    Out of Time (1991)
    Automatic for the People (1992)
