Deadwing might just be a new favourite of mine since I'm listening for the first time now and have loved every single second of the first 3 and a half songs. Excellent riffs in this song, I like the intro riff especially.

excellent riff. The whole cd is actually very good also. Their DVD is definitely worth getting as well.

I greatly respect anyone that can write a riff as badass as the lead in this line, without trying. most bands you can tell they spent a lot of time formulating something badass, but in this song it's like it just rolled off the fret board if you will. the only other band I've heard that can do *that* is nine inch nails; listen to last if you don't believe me. <3 this song.

yeah i agree with the guitarist discussion here. Steve isn't the best guitarist or improviser but he sure is a fucking sick as writer and producer and knows what he wants each song to sound like. i think gavin harrison (the drummer) is probably the most talented musician out of the bunch.

falshe said there that one fact that makes SW one of my favourite guitarists. I don't care if the guiitarist can't play one fucking solo, if the music s/he writes is half as good as Porcupine Tree's music. Actually, there isn't too much solos in 'Deadwing'... And Shallow. I've learned to appreciate this song very much lately, and at the moment it's one of my favourites :)

holy shit! I've been loving on PT for a while now, but it takes a pretty trained ear to truly appreciate this song. what's so great about it, though, is that the riff is simplistic and heavy enough to appeal to the mainstream crowd, while the song is progressive and varied enough to keep dedicated musicians interested. fucking awesome!

You hit the nail on the head. This was produced for a mainstream crowd but Wilson, being the producer that he is, never wanted to fully cave into the record label's demands, so kept it complex enough to be appreciated by PT's main audience at the same time. Your other comment on this track is pretty spot on too, Wilson himself has expressed the sporadic creation of this song. You've got a great ear!
