Ed Handley y Andrew Turner decidieron armar el proyecto Plaid de las cenizas de uno de los experimentos sonoros de electrónica IDM más importantes nacidos en Gran Bretaña, Black Dog Productions. Aunque en 1991 ya habían sacado a la venta en el sello Black Dog productions el limitadísimo Mbuki Mvuki se puede decir que su primer álbum post-Black Dog para el gran público es Not For Threes que apareció en Warp allá por 1997. Después vendrían otros dos álbumes en el mismo sello de Sheffield, Rest Proof Clockwork (1999) y Spokes (2003). En 2006 editarán un ambicioso CD acompañado de un DVD con el título Greedy Baby que es además el nombre el proyecto que les hermana con el artista visual Bob Jaroc, fiel escudero en sus live shows. Plaid se han convertido también en certeros remezcladores para artistas de la talla de Portishead, Red Snapper, Björk y The Irresistable Force. Algunos de sus mejores remixes los puedes encontrar en Plaid Remixes - Parts In The Post (2003) editado en el siempre respetado sello británico Peacefrog.
