Peter Brian Gabriel (13 de febrero de 1950 - Cobham, Surrey, Inglaterra) es un músico complejo (rock sinfónico, popular, rock’n’roll inglés, étnico) y pionero de la denominada «world music». Se hizo conocido como miembro líder (vocalista, percusionista) de la banda de rock progresivo Genesis, que fundó cuando era estudiante de la escuela secundaria Charterhouse, con sus compañeros Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips y Mike Rutherford.
Tras publicar el disco The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, el séptimo del grupo, Gabriel decidió dejar el grupo por diferencias artísticas y personales, siendo para entonces el único miembro de la banda con familia; no hubo ruptura personal y las buenas relaciones con sus antiguos compañeros permitieron la colaboración de varios de ellos a lo largo de la exitosa carrera solista de Gabriel. Su partida de Genesis marcó un antes y después en el estilo y evolución de esta mítica banda del rock progresivo.
Su primer éxito «solo» fue el sencillo
Solsbury Hill, una canción autobiográfica en la que expresa sus sentimientos al dejar Genesis. Aunque logró éxito crítico y aceptable éxito comercial desde temprano en su carrera solista, (p.e. Games Without Frontiers de su tercer álbum y Shock the Monkey del cuarto), Gabriel logró el máximo éxito comercial y popularidad con las canciones de su disco de 1986 So, en particular Sledgehammer.
