Stats, part 5: jazz

    20 Ago 2009, 16:15 de -273C

Just another one statistical post. Jazz is our field of research today (top-100 of the tag jazz, to be exact).

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

In both cases the most popular artist is Amy Winehouse (and, yes, I supposed it would be correct to exclude Tom Waits from jazz stats). Then the things go more classical: Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and so on.

    Pic. 3

And that's the way, general dependence of playcount to number of listeners looks like. You can notice, it's bending upwards with growing number of listeners. So, that means, the leaders of our statistics are treated by listeners in a different way, than other artists.

    Pic. 4 - full size

The graph of specific number of scrobbles (a playcount divided by number of listeners for each artist) confirms that notation. Surprisingly, jazz artists have very low specific scrobble number - 11 in average. Amy Winehouse has the highest one - 32.

    Pic. 5

The histogram just supports concentrating of specific number of scrobbles near very low values, repeating the histogram for other genres in general. Sad, but true. Is jazz dead?

    Pic. 6

Some stats about the user activity in shoutboxes. As one can see, there's no strict dependence of number of shouts to number of listeners. It's obvious, that more popular artists should get more shouts. By the way, Amy Winehouse isn't included here - see the next plot to understand why.

    Pic.7

And here's the dependence of number of shouts in the shoutbox to specific number of scrobbles. Amy Winehouse takes the lead again, having six times more shouts than others. So, she's really anomalous for the jazz. And without Amy, the graph exhibits the property, found in previous research: average specific number of scrobbles behaves like a barrier, separating artists with few shouts from artists with lots of them. Let us see, what another genres would show us the next time)

The total playcount in jazz's top-100 is 348 millions.

  • Oops, I'm Doing It Again: The 2009 Tournament of Tunes (Round 1 - 64)

    20 Feb 2009, 15:07 de JoeIsListening

Greetings and welcome to my second annual March Madness (started in February to get it all in) Tournament of Tunes. Last year, the Annie Lennox track EscucharCold defeated 63 others to become my first tournament winner. Who will it be this year?

Last year the iTunes randomizer completely skipped my most listened to artist, Joe Jackson. He's here this year, making up for lost time with four tracks. The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band may be a bit over-represented with three, along with various band incarnations of both Kevin Ayers and Pat Metheny. XTC returns with two, down one track from last year. And the Musical Appreciation Society has one of their own in the running this year!

So whose cuisine will reign supreme when the smoke clears from the heat of battle? Let's get started and find out...

Episode D'Azur - Pat Metheny Group
EscucharI've Seen That Face Before (Libertango) - Grace Jones
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: Starting off with a battle of mid-listers: a midlist artist (Jones) and a midlist song from a favored artist (Metheny).
Winner: I'll give this to PatMeth even though I think he's got other, better songs in the running.

EscucharMarch from A Clockwork Orange - Wendy Carlos
EscucharThis Is Hell - Elvis Costello
    Difficulty: ****
Commentary: Here's an interesting pair of songs, seemingly joined at the thematic hip.
Winner: Wendy. No matter what you name it, it's still Beethoven's Glorious Ninth.

EscucharThe Call Up - The Clash
EscucharGangster of Love - Talking Heads
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: A not-so-lovable Heads outtake versus one of my favorite Clash songs.
    Winner: Heed the call up.

    EscucharOld Days - Chicago
2 - Moloko
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: And speaking of "A Clockwork Orange", here we have the revolutionaries versus the survivors of a different revolution. Strange that by the mid-Seventies Chicago should be singing about nostalgia for a time that represented everything they were against in the Sixties. I don't have that problem with Moloko because it's in Russian, which I can't understand.
Winner: Drink your Milk. It's the better song.

EscucharLanding On Earth - Petra Haden and Woody Jackson
A Question Of Temperature - The Balloon Farm
    Difficulty: ***
    Commentary: Semi-ambient jazz vs. psychedelia.
Winner: I'm in love with Petra's voice, even when it isn't saying anything.

The Fish And The Bird - Mark Knopfler
    EscucharSasquatch - Camel
    Difficulty: ***
Commentary: Celtic flavored Knopfler versus a rollicking Camel tune.
Winner: The progsters. But the MK tune is still growing on me, and may have one if given another couple months of listening.

I'm the Man Who Murdered Love - XTC
    EscucharCrazy - Icehouse
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: Not-one-of-my-favorite XTC tunes (Andy trying too hard) against not-one-of-my-favorite Icehouse tunes (Iva trying to be commercial).
Winner: I'd have to be crazy, baby.

EscucharPaint It Black - The Feelies
The Fool - Neutral Milk Hotel
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: This could be the oddest matchup here.
    Winner: The cover version.

    Noodling - Dan Sonnier
    Nothin' Wrong - Jim Bauer
    Difficulty: ****
Commentary: One of the MAS's own versus one of the most interesting undiscovered songwriters out there.
Winner: Dan, Dan, Dan, I love your song but it's just too short! I want the painting, not the sketch! At least you lost to someone who may be a genius.

    Disneyland Is Burning - a3
EscucharOnly the Future - Joe Jackson
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: Country acid house vs. post-pop synths, strings, and sequencing. Who'd have thought?
    Winner: It's only the future!

EscucharSnow and Lights - Explosions in the Sky
    Now I 'm here - Queen
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: Post-rock versus arena rock. I keep Explosions in the Sky around because they make great proggish sounding background music. But the Queen song demands to be heard.
    Winner: Now I'm there.

    EscucharTake My Will - Jandek
Walk Away - The English Beat
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: It's always good to see a Jandek song in the competition, even if I know that he's going to get blown out during the first round. Some year one of his true classics will get included. Watch out when that happens.
Winner: But it won't happen this year.

    EscucharSerious - Duran Duran
Wouldn't It Be Good '95 - Nik Kershaw
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: It's the battle of nineties pop, sort of: The returns and the rehash.
Winner: The rehash, although the original is much better.

Thought I'd Never See You Again - Working Week
Hunting Tigers Out In 'Indiah' - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
    Difficulty: ****
Commentary: I'm starting to decide that some mismatches make the toughest calls. A passionate song from Working Week versus a goofy classic from the Bonzos. It's like choosing between apples and oranges.
Winner: Orange you glad I chose the Bonzos?

EscucharAre We Ourselves - The Fixx
    Wild Strawberries - Jandek
    Difficulty: *
    Commentary: See previous Jandek comment.
    Winner: The Fixx is in.

    EscucharThe Sweetest Taboo - Sade
    EscucharWhatevershebringswesing - Kevin Ayers
    Difficulty:***
Commentary: More passion versus goofiness, by way of psychedelia.
    Winner: This time, the goofiness.

Peace in the Valley - a3
    Steam - Fay Lovsky
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: More country acid house versus a pop artist that's hard to pin down. I'm starting to wonder where all the really strong tracks are in the contest. Did I go through this last year?
Winner: Steam is one of Fay's slightest tracks, but still more interesting than A3's.

    The Creeps - Social Distortion
    EscucharSunday - David Bowie
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: Social D versus David B. Could be a close one with the right tracks. But this one wasn't.
    Winner: Bowie.

Bury the Hatchet - Fay Lovsky
SGT. Rock (Is Going to Help Me) - XTC
    Difficulty: ***
Commentary: Finally, a stronger track from Holland's Fay Lovsky.
Winner: Unfortunately, it was up against a really strong XTC track.

The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us - Sufjan Stevens
It Begins with a Blessing, Once I Awakened, But It Ends with a Curse - Kevin Ayers
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: In a way, aren't Kevin Ayers and Sufjan Stevens the same person?
Winner: Sufjan's derivitaive minimalism trumps Ayer's derivative psychedelia. This time.

    EscucharRun On - Moby
    EscucharTerraplane Blues - Robert Johnson
    Difficulty: ***
Commentary: This wins the prize for most ironic matchup. The sampler versus the sampled.
Winner: Hmmm, the sampler wins this one. Even more irony.

    EscucharLove Vigilantes - New Order
    EscucharDesert Wash - Dan Tharp
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: I like New Order, but actually I think this song is kind of annoying. Or maybe I'm finally outgrowing them. Dan Tharp is a solo acoustic guitarist I found on garageband.com
    Winner: Danny boy.

Annie's Bittersweet Cake - Pat Metheny
    EscucharPersephone - Kula Shaker
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: Another battle of second tiers.
Winner: The Beatlesque Kula Shaker tune.

    Your Wildlife - Propaganda
EscucharJolie Madame - Kevin Ayers and the Whole World
    Difficulty: ***
Commentary: Past-prime Propaganda (with rapping!) versus more indulgent Ayers trippiness. An Ayers/Propaganda should be a battle to be feared, but not with these two tracks.
Winner: Oh, heck... Ayers, I guess.

EscucharLove Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Cause a Rockslide - Badly Drawn Boy
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: This could have been a better fight, but Damon's contribution is a bit of a mess.
    Winner: Torn apart.

Meeting (Garden of Geda) / Sound Out the Galleon - Jon Anderson
Like an Outlaw (For You) - Social Distortion
    Difficulty: ****
Commentary: At finally, another battle to sink my teeth into - or that sinks it teeth in to me. Jon Anderson's one burst of proggy goodness outside of Yes, versus Social D's lovestruck take on Ghost Riders In The Sky.
    Winner: Call me an outlaw.

Laughing Blues - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
    Wind - Godley & Creme
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: The battle of the novelty tracks.
    Winner: G & C

EscucharSand in Your Shoes - Al Stewart
    EscucharGoin' Southbound - Stan Ridgway
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: The historian v. the storyteller. You decide which is which.
Winner: This isn't the Al track to take on this Stan track.

EscucharDon't Wanna Be Like That - Joe Jackson
    Cowboy Star - Ambrosia
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: Punk v. Prog. It's the late seventies all over again!
Winner: The punk. A stronger Ambrosia track would've spelled trouble.

We Can't Live Together - Joe Jackson
Can Blue Men Sing The Whites? - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: More Bonzos, more Jackson. With those odds, one of the two is bound to go all the way, don'cha think?
Winner: Headin' for JJ v. JJ next round!

Back in Time - Pat Metheny
EscucharI Am the Mercury - Jimmie Spheeris
    Difficulty: **
Commentary: I have as many Pat Metheny albums as probably any other artist except Jandek (don't ask). And I only have this one Jimmie Spheeris song. There's a good reason I spent so much time hunting the latter.
    Winner: Mercury rising

    EscucharMental - Eels
    EscucharHappy Ending - Joe Jackson
    Difficulty: *
Commentary: E emotes. Joe gets happy.
    Winner: Stay happy.

There you have the first round. What will happen in the next? Will Joe Jackson triumph and face off against himself in the finals? Or will some other screwy thing happen instead? Tune in next Friday as the drama unfolds...

  • The Hypelist [ October 11th - October 18th ]

    12 Oct 2008, 15:57 de oslofish

    Here's this week's hypelist:

    • Nouvelle Vague - This Is Not America (Featuring Juliette Lewis)
I don't remember ever hearing the original song, a collab between David Bowie and Pat Metheny Group. Whether it does it justice or not I could care less. There's something about Juliette's voice that gets to me. It's strong, raw and beautiful.

    • Jenny Lewis - Pretty Bird
      So sad, so good.

    • Electric Valentine - 2 of hearts
Blogsters (+ me) have been going gaga over the Annie take on the Stacey Q hit, but I think this one actually is slightly better.

    • Anjela - No Way (Remix) (Feat. Future)
      MySpace-discovery via EQ.

    • Mirror - EscucharNowhere (feat. Frances Lawson)
Where did this voice come from? It's gorgeous.

  • 10 Jazz Fusion Essentials

    26 Sep 2008, 17:39 de hemlokk

    by Tom Moon

Fusion has meant many things, but the initial hit, spelled out by Bitches Brew, was simple: jazz improvisations over a rock-like rhythm bed. Tailor-made for hotshot electric guitarists and synthesists, it went through many changes from its Seventies heyday. Now, even such pablumized instrumental pop music as Kenny G's gets labeled "fusion". The squishiness of the term makes it impossible to arrive at a definitive list of 10 fusion titles - does Frank Zappa, architect of so much impossibly technical jazz-rock count? Do British prog-rockers like Steve Hillage and Gong? What about the abstractions of Ornette Coleman circa "Dancing In Your Head"? Rather than cover the waterfront, we concentrate on guitar-oriented fusion albums from some of the genre's major figures.

    al dimeola
    Splendido Hotel (Columbia, 1979)
When Al DiMeola first appeared on the scene in 1974 as a member of Return to Forever, his fleet-fingered runs and dramatic careening phrases set the bar just a little bit higher for fusion guitarists. But it took a few years of record-making until he found a sound that was more than just nerdoid noodling. Though there are plenty of guitar pyrotechnics on Splendido Hotel, they're tucked into all the right places of the stop-start workouts "Dream Theme" and "Alien Chase," and, remarkably, they rarely detract from the overall mood.

    Jimi Hendrix
    Band of Gypsies (Capitol, 1970)
Fusion purists may quibble with this inclusion, but there's no denying that Hendrix' last trio, with Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox, was playing something that was not simply foursquare rock or booty-shaking funk. Whatever it was, it sure had lots of mind-bending guitar improvisation in it. Many fusion guitarists, including McLaughlin, have cited Hendrix as an inspiration, and "EscucharMachine Gun" and "EscucharMessage of Love" offer plenty of reasons why. His lines twist and contort into exquisite shapes, and his harangues are alternately driven by road-warrior rage or an unusually contemplative lyricism- and these qualities, as much as the sheer dense force of this trio, had an influence on everyone exploring music in 1970.

    Weather Report
    Heavy Weather (Columbia, 1977)
There's no guitarist on this commercial breakthrough, but there might as well be. Playing fretless bass and pitch-bending like he's determined to stretch the neck, Jaco Pastorious brought a guitarlike sense of phrasing to this protean group and showed that it was possible to possess superhuman virtuosity, yet play with a deep appreciation of melody and a lyrical sixth sense.

    Return to Forever
Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (Polydor, 1973)
With Hymn, Chick Corea created a dauntingly detailed, intricate music full of spry melodies and subversive counterlines, in which the individual contributions of the soloists (mainly Corea and guitarist Bill Conners) were woven into roiling, syncopated rhythms. Though later RTF albums (particularly those with guitarist Al DiMeola) saw the group concentrate on motifs that tested the limits of technical mastery, this group was more notable for its sheer energy level, high-speed-shuttle grooves and furious, crackling interplay.

    Jeff Beck
    Blow By Blow (Epic, 1975)
Of all the rock guitarists who ventured into the fusion trench, Jeff Beck looms as one of the most articulate, a rare riff-master who can navigate unusual harmonic structures and tricky, sidewinding lines and still come up with music that speaks with the emotional knife-edge of rock. On the craft Blow By Blow - most notably, perhaps the ebullient stone-cold classic shuffle "EscucharFreeway Jam"-Beck employs expansive, fluid lines to soar above high-stepping funk and slippery rock.

    Mahavishnu Orchestra
The Inner Mounting Flame (Columbia, 1971)
This first effort from the Mahavishnu Orchestra opens with a hefty, rafters-rattling chord, the kind of thing you would expect to hear at the end of an emotionally exhausting piece of orchestral music. From that gathering point, guitarist McLaughlin and his crew (vioinist Jerry Goodman, keyboardist Jan Hammer, bassist Rick Laird and drummer Billy Cobham) embark on a feverish uptempo excursion called "EscucharMeeting Of The Spirits," tossing hot-wired melodies back and forth as though their characters were being tested with every note. All of The Inner Mounting Flame burns at that intensity level; even a contemplative ballad like "EscucharDawn" is spiced with a mid-section full of unexpected hairpin turns. And when John McLaughlin launches a more rock-oriented trip, like the percolating "Noonward Race," it's as though he's channeling all the great guitar playing he'd heard in recent years - Hendrix' fury, Santana's elegance - into a brilliantly agitated summation. Flame and its follow-up, Birds of Fire, are both excellent examples of technical mastery in the service of ambitious, relentlessly imaginative music.

John Mclaughlin, Al Dimeola, Paco Delucia
Friday Night in San Francisco (Columbia, 1981)
There was no shortage of fusion supergroups in the late Seventies and early Eighties; only a shortage of interesting ones. The acoustic guitar setting of Friday Night proved perfect for this trio, which reunited for a studio set in 1983, "Passion, Grace and Fire". Both offer pleasurable romps, though the trio's flamenco reworkings are significantly hotter on the performance disc, and there's more live-wire suspense in the exchanges.

    Pat Metheny Group
    Pat Metheny Group (ECM, 1978)
Most fusion stomps around with a heavy foot. Pat Metheny floats. This Midwestern guitar prodigy borrowed elements from many fusion pioneers-Corea's needlepoint melodies, McLaughlin's ecstatic peak-seeking, Wes Montgomery's rounded mellow tone- then whipped them into a light, pastel-hued approach to rhythm that was revolutionary for its subtlety.

    Billy Cobham
    Spectrum (Atlantic, 1973)
By the time he made his solo debut in '73, drummer Billy Cobham had done time with Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and was seeking a hybrid of jazz and rock with a more assertive rhythmic foundation- fusion that followed a tighter script. With this charged album, he got it. Though there are two stylized, heavily arranged tracks featuring guitarist John Tropea and a horn section with saxophonist Joe Farrell, the highlights come from the band with guitarist Tommy Bolin and keyboardist Jan Hammer, two technically accomplished musicians who understand the power of repetition and the way to make rock rhythms sizzle. This rhythm section tore through muscular melodies and disciplined solo bursts, and was particularly keen on developing episodes of scrappy, high-intensity crossfire like those on "EscucharRed Baron" and "Taurian Matador."

    Sonny Sharrock
    Guitar (Enemy, 1986)
The late Sonny Sharrock played with Miles Davis just after Bitches Brew, in the band with McLaughlin and Cobham that yielded the funk-tinged Jack Johnson. After that, he essentially disappeared until the Eighties, when he surfaced in Bill Laswell's genre-hopping Materialand Last Exit and began a solo career with this exhaustive, wide-ranging statement. Though he's not considered exclusively a "fusion" guitarist, his approach was marked by an inquisitiveness that aligns him with the genre's masters. On this album, for example, he experiments with slide guitar, offers a tone-poem reverie and a mournful, pondering blues, and veers from crisp, single-note lines to abrasive chordal gales that dance right along the edge of distortion and feedback, yet never lose their sense of musicality.

    5 Jun 2008, 12:14 de Michikawa

I decided to create a blog. Or well, not an actual blog, but blog-like site where I write sort of reviews about various things I hold in great value. I'm not a person who enjoys writing about my own life and things that happen to me. But I do enjoy sharing certain things with other people, like music I enjoy listening to, series I enjoy watching, books I enjoy reading and analysis why I happen to enjoy them and what is so good about them. I think collection of these kinds of things can define the person in a reasonable and enjoyable way and offer new experiences to readers too.

Feel free to drop by and comment:
