    Atículo en castellano e inglés

After much investigate on several pages of the net about music, I re-compiled the necessary information to find the best groups and soloists of the history of music.

The whole world knows that the best music always will be the classic music, but for those who are not prepared such mastery and talent, one can accede to "easier" music to listen like it is the Rock or similar.

In spite of not being a music so grand as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach or company, it is possible to find real preciousness worth being listened for the trained ear or the opened mind.

I repeat, I have investigated very much to find the list of really better musicians of last times. They are for these persons with delicately taste and who indeed can estimate them. Don't for fools.

  • Ironic indirect influences on nu-metal

    25 Ago 2009, 1:11 de HuskerDuMaur

This is something that's been on my mind recently:

You all know that nu-metal bands took an assload of influence from funk metal bands like RHCP, Jane's Addiction, Primus, Mr. Bungle, and Faith No More, but the funny thing is that the bands influencing their influences are so vast in genres and yet have nothing directly to do with their sound. I made a list of such bands:

    XTC
    Talking Heads
    Frank Zappa
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
    Devo
    The Residents
    Peter Gabriel
    Bauhaus
    Bob Marley
    Parliament
    Funkadelic
    The Germs
    The Stooges
    The Velvet Underground
    Rush
    Pink Floyd
    Oingo Boingo
    Grateful Dead
    King Crimson
    Sly & The Family Stone
    Jimi Hendrix
    Fela Kuti
    The Smiths
    Public Image Ltd.
    Dead Kennedys
    Brian Eno
    Black Flag
    Burt Bacharach
    Bad Brains
    Gang of Four
    Minutemen
    The Doors
    David Bowie
    The Jesus and Mary Chain
    The Cure
    The Beach Boys

  • The King (of Pop) and I – (Almost) A Michael Jackson Home Story

    30 Jun 2009, 23:39 de pjebsen

When I was working as a music journalist from the early ‘80s to the mid-’90s, I spent about five months a year in New York City (Manhattan), Los Angeles (Hollywood, 90028) and varying additional U.S. cities. In L.A., I became friends with Shirley Brooks, a Japanese-African American who, among other duties, was CBS Records’ liaison for visiting foreign journalists like me.

Her kids were friends with some of the Jacksons’ kids, therefore she had close ties to the entire clan. In 1984, she arranged an interview with LaToya Jackson whose Epic album “Hearts Don’t Lie” was about to be released. Instead of doing this at CBS Records’ L.A. headquarters in Culver City, Shirley suggested a more interesting place – the Jackson family’s home in Encino (San Fernando Valley). Who was I to object! ;-)

When we arrived there, Michael Jackson wasn’t home – after the 1982 hype around his “Thriller” album, he had gotten himself an additional private refuge.

At the time, father Joe Jackson (Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson) and mother Katherine Jackson (Katherine Esther Jackson [née Scruse]) had already split up, but Joe returned to the house because a Japanese camera team was present in order to shoot a cute home story with an intact family.

We got there during a lunch break. The Japanese team was cooking for Katherine and Joe – as far as I remember, the food tasted great! ;-)

When the Japanese team continued shooting after the lunch break, I spent some waiting time in the living room, watching TV. I remember Janet Jackson passing resp. jumping by (in a track suit). Of course, she didn’t remember me – but I had done an interview with her at the office of her record company A&M on La Brea two years ago, when she released her self-titled debut album "Janet Jackson" at age 16.

I was impressed by the fact that LaToya and I did our interview in the private movie theater of the Jacksons’ home (a 20- to 30-seater). The most memorable part of the interview involved LaToya’s claim that she initially had no interest at all in the music industry. Instead, she studied law. According to her, she only started recording due to pressure from her family.

Although my visit took place two years after Michael’s “Thriller”, fans still were camping outside of the Jacksons’ family home 24/7. Whenever an important-looking car (as opposed to Shirley's raggedy Honda ;-) ) was passing the gate, some fans were following. Whenever it was more than one car, the fans split up into tag-teams.

I have to add that I was and still am primarily a fan of funkier and more anarchistic jam sounds like p-funk. But, right after George Clinton and his collaborators like Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell & Garry Shider, my second favorite producer of all time has always been Quincy Jones.

As I mentioned in my (German) blog post about the 15 albums which had the greatest impact on me, I once experienced ‘the best of both worlds’ on one single day: In 1989, I was on tour with George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic (hawking my New Funk Times newsletter). I was offered an interview with Quincy Jones – luckily, it was scheduled on one of P.Funk’s rare days off. I flew from Hamburg to Frankfurt, with lots of greetings from the P. to the Q. Although their approaches are pretty much different, there was a lot of mutual appreciation in effect.

Since Quincy’s solo (?) album “The Dude” came out 1980, I’ve been awaiting anything new by Q. almost as eagerly as new P.Funk releases. Mega projects like his Michael Jackson albums sometimes took a long time, but when they were finished they sounded nothing but perfect. There was a lot of love for detail – e. g., when you heard certain synthesizer lines by Greg Phillinganes, you understood: Finding that particular magical sound probably set the project back for an additional six months.

In the ‘80s, I also had the chance of meeting one of Quincy’s most important accomplices: Swedish-American sound engineer Bruce Swedien who had started working with Q. in Chicago in the ‘60s (recording artists like Count Basie).

I visited Bruce at this Viking Ranch in the San Fernando Valley. After walking around and taking some pictures at the close-by orange plantation, he told me that he used to run an additional safety copy for himself whenever he did a final mix. He had saved a lot of those tapes on the Viking Ranch, and he played me a Count Basie recording from the ‘60s on an old valve amplifier. The sound quality blew me away – it was better than what you got to hear on the vinyl released back then. Apparently, it was pretty tricky to transfer all the aural details from tape to record.

Do you remember the little “Acusonic Recording Process” logo on the Michael Jackson albums? This was something Bruce cooked up with Quincy Jones. The technical part (as explained by Bruce himself) is interesting enough.

But he also told me that, for him, the Acusonic Recording Process was mainly characterized by his personal approach to multi-track recording: Whenever he did the final mix for a track (including Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World” project which he recorded on two 64-track tape recorders!), he tried to make each player’s and singer’s place in the ‘aural landscape’ coincide with their actual position in the recording studio.

If you made it until the end of this blog entry: Thanks for putting up with my rambling! ;-)

And now for some MJ-related trivia: Did you know that the Mick Jackson who co-wrote the funky Jacksons smash "EscucharBlame It On The Boogie" wasn't an alias of Michael Jackson? The other MJ is a German-born English singer-songwriter. Here's is original version:

My favorite and most concise praise of Michael Jackson was voiced by none other than George Carlin. I don't necessarily agree with everything he said (the "freaking kids" part is borderline), but - apart from this - the other GC does a good job in 1 minute 7 seconds:

  • The [insert original band name here]s

    31 May 2009, 1:29 de Ice_9

The more music I listen to, the more I can work out how much I'll like a band based on their name. Occasionally I'll muck up horrendously (The Acacia Strain) but often I can work it out and get awesome results ( Týr, Diablo Swing Orchestra and so on).

One set of names I tend to avoid is bands that begin with 'The' and end in 's', ie: The Somethings. Now there are exceptions but that's not what this is about. Generally, these names conjure up connotations of Indie/hipster/pop bands which isn't my kind of music. However, I realised today, that if I transformed my favourite artists names by changing it into "The [band names]s" I could completely change my opinion on the name and on what I think they'd sound like. So what I figured I'd do, is take some of my top 20 (and one or two choice selections) and see how different they would seem with the change in title.

    The Jonathan Coultons:
I'm not sure this one works too well. I think if he were really famous or a cult icon it could easily be a really infuriating indie band. I think "The Susan Boyles" would be a band that's name turned me off instantly. Feel free to take that name.

    The Dream Theaters:
This sounds more like a concept album than a band. I think I would actually buy it if it were an album. If it were a band? Probably not. Sounds like they wouldn't really know english.

    The Parliaments:
I'm too connected to Parliament, plus I know this was their name in there earliest incarnation, but I reckon this could have been a London based pop-punk band from the late 80s, early 90s. Would have fans that really should try different music.

    The Ayreons:
This would definetely be a really obscure indie band that would be brought up at the end of a game of 'No way, I like way less famous bands than you' (probably as the killing blow). It would be described with words like "Comtemporary revival soul pop" or "Smooth anti punk indie folk" leaving no-one with any clue what they sound like. Would never have more than 13 fans due to them being 'too mainstream' when they hit 14, so they lose one. Would have 4 albums out before anyone knows who they are.

    The Pain of Salvations:
While the name doesn't make a lot of sense, this would either be a hopeless emo "what's the point?" band or infact, exactly the same band as it is now, but with worse grammar and pronounciation.

    The The Lonely Islands:
This partly works, but I wouldn't listen to it. Would probably be some californian folk group or a bunch of surprisingly old bald americans in an R.E.M. style band. Would be popular, but nobodies favourite band.

    The Black Mages
This is one of the exceptions. Due to the instant link to videogames/fantasy/nerdy things, this band could never be an indie band, no matter how 'ironic' they're trying to be.

    The Pagan Minds (Pagan's Mind):
Edited this a bit, because I think "The Pagan Minds" could easily be a 70s progressive rock group from some quiet english county. Or an anti-anti-anti-folk supergroup.

    The Seventh Wonders:
This would absolutely be a 70s English Progressive Rock group.

    The Shadow Galleries (Shadow Gallery:)
This would probably sound just like one of the bands listed above, but the name sounds great, so I'd make myself like it. That seems like a flaw of mine, revealing a rather shallow personality, but I'll ignore that for now. Probably a side-project turned main project by someone who has already done that so many times, you'll struggle to remember why you know them in the first place.

    The Strapping Young Lads:

This one is what made me think of this whole blog idea. That band is so quickly transformed into a run-of-the-mill "Why are these guys 'groundbreaking'? They sound like everyone else..." artist with just 4 characters. It's rather ridiculous. With a name like this, this band could last an indie music generation (about 2 years in some version of the public eye). Would continue to make music for 15 years after everyone has forgotten them. I'm actually shocked this is not already a band's name.

That's as far as I'll go. If you got this far, you've probably tried it with your own most played lists. Post if you have any as mindblowing as The Strapping Young Lads.

So what have you learned? Firstly, names are important (remind me why I listened to Fairyland in the first place). Secondly if you can't think of a band name, slightly edit a current one. Love Starsailor? Here comes The Starsailors! No-one will notice.

I may think about trying this in reverse. The more I think about it, the more I like Libertine as a name.

(also: wow, what a journal drought...)
