La escena musical de Liverpool a fines de los 70’s representaba un excitante y dinámico lugar donde se podía triunfar . Todo el mundo integraba una banda, tenía incluso la libertad de optar entre una u otra, o lisa y llanamente estaba formando un grupo. En medio de toda esta actividad se encontraba Eric’s Club, un espacio pequeño y discreto que promovió a varios exponentes como The Teardrop Explodes, Echo & the Bunnymen y Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Este era el panorama que reinaba en ese local, cuando Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark debutaron en 1978.
Los miembros fundadores Andy McCluskey y Paul Humphreys habían sido originalmente inspirados por la música electrónica experimental de grupos alemanes como Kraftwerk y Neu!. Trabajando con radio sets y sintetizadores de fabricación propia, Humphreys y McCluskey se bautizaron a sí mismos como VCLXI, tomando como referencia un diagrama que aparecía en el album ‘Radioactivity’ de Kraftwerk, y es de esta manera que comienzan a experimentar musicalmente. Sin embargo, esto no era otra cosa más que un tímido proyecto que el dúo desarrollaba durante los fines de semana mientras eran activos en otras bandas locales de Liverpool, caso de Equinox, Pegasus y Dalek I Love You. A pesar de haber acumulado una riquísima experiencia en lo que respecta al concepto standard de un grupo artístico, sintieron en determinado momento que esas vivencias no les satisfacían por completo, más que nada en términos creativos. Era tiempo de hacer un cambio.

Well, pretty much the top 10 songs are songs we pretty much heard all the time on the radio and on MTV! That is how people know the band for these "songs" its not a bad thing, but the band has so much more better songs that people really don't know ~meaning~ If they only heard the few songs that everybody has heard thru the days! I like more OMD the late 70`s and early 80`s they were pretty much a dark synth band as the name would be called~ IN THE DARK~ cause the atmosphere was more of a dark feel. Then they went more Pop synth in mid 80`s! So please try some of these songs ~Navigation,The Avenue,The Beginning And The End,Annex,Stanlow,Statues,The Messerschmitt Twins,International,Sacred Heart~These songs have more of a dark synth sound to them! :)
