There is nothing experimental or avant-garde about Opeth whatsoever.

@ JBT: What are those "experimental/avante-garde influences" that Opeth has?

"Had to go back to Still Life to cleanse my ears after the abomination that is Heritage, fuck." Same here. Let's just pretend that album never happened.

Oh my God, this just started on my radio and I am unbelievably pleased even though this is my 100th time listening to this song.

I find Damnation more of a Departure than Heritage. It was way more pop-sounding and despite being clean, sounded like very little other clean sections from previous Opeth albums. More melancholic but less gothic, not very acoustic, not a lot of blues/jazz/folk. Just very bleak and pretty soft rock. Heritage has more of the juxtaposition that Opeth stands for, which is by the way not death metal + clean music, but beautiful music balanced out with ugly/disgusting harmonies. There are instances where acoustic Opeth is evil and distorted Opeth is enlightening. For the record, I like Heritage, but I have familiarity with the more experimental/avant-garde influences of Opeth, as opposed to the cliche prog ones like Camel or similar 70's bands.

To those defending Heritage - of course we accept that Opeth are a progressive band, but Heritage,IMO, is just plain awful. Some ok tracks on there but Mike's masturbation on record has gone to an extreme level. This should have been a solo record for Akerfeldt. I wouldn't have minded another Watershed to be fair - that record was killer. But Heritage proved to me that Opeth are, after all, human. Just not a fan.

I agree, by and large -- you seem to imply that Opeth weren't already extremely diverse, though, which I certainly do not agree with. But seeing as it's a rather big departure, I can understand that not everyone who likes Opeth's usual music -- which by default shows a level of open-mindedness in them -- will take a liking to it. I don't think it's GREAT myself, but it's certainly not bad. As for Damnation, I think that's how they should have done with Heritage (you know, for my own sake): release it sort of alongside an album that's more true to form. In other news, the RAH version of this song is FUCKING AMAZING.

The hatred for Heritage is something I still can't understand, a band is supposed to do the same music all the time? Being progressive is a thing that all bands should have. They clearly got bored with the death metal so now they are doing something they have all wanted since beginning. Not that pre-Heritage albums were bad, they were all perfect as I like them too but I also loved Damnation and Heritage so much because they were fresh air, a difference they had to be. They are trying to make the same music of their idols and show their influences clearly, without them the Opeth we know would never exist in the first place, so you should show some respect to them because they made a original innovative album which some of you would never understand the idea behind idea. Bands don't have to satisfy the fans all the time, they should make music they want first.
