of Montreal es una agrupación musical originaria de Athens, Georgia; que formó parte de la segunda generación de bandas emergentes del Elephant 6 Collective.

Kevin Barnes, vocalista de la banda, decidió nombrar «of Montreal» a esta tras un romance fallido con una chica originaria de Montreal, Canadá.

El disco debut de la banda, Cherry peel, salió a la venta en 1997, seguido por el EP The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit’s Flower.

El segundo disco de larga duración de of Montreal fué The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy, grabado en su mayoría por Kevin Barnes en su hogar en Athens.

The Gay parade, tercer disco de la banda, fué lanzado en 1999 y permitió a la banda irse haciendo de un nombre importante en la cultura independiente de los Estados Unidos y Canadá. El grupo continuó con Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse, lanzado en 2001, y Aldhils Arboretum en Septiembre del 2002.

Los últimos trabajos de larga duración de la banda permitieron que ésta adquiriera un estatus cercano al culto por los más fervientes seguidores del «indie-pop» en el mundo: Satanic Panic in the Attic, The Sunlandic Twins y Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?; siendo el último el que los diera a conocer mundialmente gracias a sus tintes electrónicos.
