The use of “consumerism” in the title denotes, not only the desire for things, but all our reality television, text messaging, and everything valueless. I didn't know what to call this, so I just use the word consumerism as a convenience.
About a month and a half ago I was listening to Lunar Aurora while the television was playing in the background. As it happened, some reality television show came on, and I don't know what it was -- the perfect time of day, the perfect song (“Flammen Der Sehnsucht”) -- but right then everything came into an alien and ghastly focus. All their artificial smiling and perfectly kept hair against the blast beats. Their glaringly white teeth against the tortured wailing. The sunny beach against the freezing music. Suddenly you could pick out every object that had been airbrushed and photoshoped to death. It was almost as if the black metal began attacking the images, like an immune system attacking some kind of invading sickness. …
