  • Top Albums of '09

    15 Dic 2009, 17:49 de stayingFAT

Here's my list of my top 10 albums from '09 determined by the number of scrobbles on Last.fm this year:

    1. Oh No - Dr. No's Ethiopium

A superb blend of instrumental hip-hop and 60's/70's Ethiopian psych/rock/funk samples. Possibly one of the best instrumental hip-hop albums since DJ Shadow released Endtroducing in 1996.

    2. White Denim - Fits

This rock trio from Austin, TX shows amazing versatility and urgency with their music and from what I hear, might put on one of the best shows in music today. Come visit Omaha, please!

    3. Black Lips - 200 Million Thousand

I love the scuzzy, dirty punk rock these guys make and they took lo-fi to a new gritty low this year. Amazing to see live also.

    4. The Thermals - Now We Can See

This is the most earnest album I heard all of '09. Though The Thermals shifted away from their anti-religion/anti-government vitriol, they can still churn out great punk music.

    5. Atlas Sound - Logos

I'm a later bloomer - "Logos" finally piqued my interest in Atlas Sound/Deerhunter, but now I'm addicted. I don't know how to label this music - psychedelic, bedroom pop, experimental, etc. - but I can listen to it over and over.

    6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

Karen O & Co. has matured from the garage rock revival to synthesizers and dance-floor burners? Yes, please.

    7. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

This band deserved all the hype they received for "MPP". I'm actually baffled I didn't listen to it more in '09!

    8. A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head

"The loudest band from NYC" added a few more looped amplifiers to turn their sound into a bigger monster, yet added more melody to the vocals. Ear-shattering and beautiful at the same time.

    9. Doom - Born Like This

My favorite MC is (finally) back with a new album! Sweet. It also features one of the best songs of '09, EscucharGazzillion Ear, produced by the late, great J Dilla.

    10. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

Don't tell me you didn't see this one coming. This album had to rank solely based on the track While You Wait for the Others.

    Honorable Mentions:
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!
    Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Peter Bjorn and John - Living Thing
    Nirvana - Live at Reading
Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong

    14 Dic 2009, 17:43 de butane_killer

So basically if you sign up for this site you can earn points for free stuff. Yes it sounds sketchy at first, but the good thing is you don't have to spend money or pay for "offers" (aka rip offs) to get points. You just log in every day, answer questions, watch videos and refer people. Go HERE if you want to sign up. The site is called Lockerz.com and it's managed by the former marketing manager of Amazon or something, so it's legit.

Also, you can sign up and never come back to the site ever again. But I would totally appreciate if you could just sign up so I could get a few points. I get 4 per sign up, and I have about 300, and I am saving for a MacBook Air which is 250, so I have some ways to go. They don't spam you in case you're wondering.

In case you forgot, the link is HERE so sign up please!

  • X Factor Killing Music?

    13 Dic 2009, 18:57 de Apollyon_

Okay, first off, dramatic title, but I know myself that on this website I skim down artist pages, and only bold titles grab my attention. Hell, there's a good reason for it; journals here have went mostly to piss since every user and their mate decided it would be a good idea to post 'My top albums' lists ad infinitum.

It's been a while since I vented my thoughts, and looking through past journals and comments, it invigorated me, to an extent where I wish to share something that's been driving me crazy for quite a while.

The X-Factor, never off our red-banner tabloids (What's Afghanistan matter when Tiger is about, eh Sun?) or TV screens was angry to discover this week that the funk/rap metal band Rage Against the Machine's classic song EscucharKilling In The Name had been chosen to spoil the fun.

On Facebook, the group is hundreds of thousands strong, a casual look at the shoutbox here on Last Fm tells us a similar story, and every rock/music blog and magazine has been shouting about it. Now, I'm all for a shake up of the mainstream charts and system. It's refreshing to see the 'alternative' music scene get their share of the publicity pie.

What annoyed me was that arrogant, smug bastard Simon Cowell's reaction. For all his millions, that man has no class - he argued that such an online movement was 'stealing' his TV show competitor's chance at a big hit. The way he said it made him sound as though he feels that every Christmas, the X-Factor winner has a divine right to a Number 1 hit. His shown has been denying EVERYONE for YEARS.

If you look at what I listen to, you'll realise I've never cared for what's top of the charts, I couldn't name you a Mika song and I detest Nickleback. That's all and good, everyone has non-subjective tastes. But what I hate is programs like the X-Factor, that manufacture talent, that water down original versions, pollute any sense of artistic meaning in music, and ram their own views down the throats of millions. This show is an abomination; a macabre mixture of the freak-show auditions, ratings squeezing rounds and then what is usually a vastly overrated, unprepared winner. How many have swam, not sank? JLS? I personally wouldn't call that talent, but each to their own.

In short, The X-Factor, and to a certain extent shows like 'I'm a Celebrity...' and 'Big Brother' are mindless, inane shows, devoid of meaning or a context in reality. Every year, I watch masses of people turn into cogs in a greater industry machine. Call me a typical black metal 'Grim' person but it disgusts me.

Buy the RATM single, hell, buy two. It's about time such trivial filth gets a slap in the face, and the X-Factor has got one, whether they get their coveted number one or not. I just hope that in result of this competition, people stop taking what they are given for granted, and look for some real, tangible meaning in what they listen to. I know some people will argue otherwise, but I can't imagine being emotionally connected to EscucharGimme More without being a little shallow. When with others, particularly in a school, or social environment I feel such disparagement at what goes for meaningful music in popular culture.

Is there a difference between a musician and an artist?

PS: Hope that was coherent and better than another '20 Questions about your top 50' journal. Opinions are welcome. Thanks.

    Them Crooked Vultures

*pitchfork'a aldanmayın, onlar ortaya çıkan müziğe değil "süper grup" tanımlamasına takılmış durumdalar.

  • #1's - Marco Zero, 11 de dezembro de 2009, Feira Music Brasil

    13 Dic 2009, 12:50 de vhtsouza

Quarta 9 Dez – Feira Music Brasil

Então, agora começa a parte ruim. Senti-me em um show rastafári.

p.s.: Review do site oficial do Feira Music Brasil http://feiramusicabrasil.com.br/site/?p=696. Vale a pena!

    "And this is my chance
I get eaten by the worms"...
