• Meme of the top 30 artists

    29 May 2008, 1:05 de aikakone

    Use your top 30 to answer the following questions:

    1. How did you get into 29?
    Live: I heard and liked a song from their first album, but it was their massive 2nd album Throwing Copper that had lots of radio singles. When I bought it, I could listen to about 6 songs (tracks 2-7 on CD) straight through and over again ad nauseum.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    King's X: It might have been one of the singles from the first album, but it was most likely Summerland from the second album Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
    Fall Out Boy: I own two separate albums, but I have 3 distinct copies of Infinity On High

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
    Dave Dobbyn: Right now (all favorites can change) Just Add Water

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
    Neil Finn: One of the best songwriters there is. My favorite just as I do this meme of his solo stuff is Truth, but with Neil my favorites do change frequently.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?

  • Great Bass, 1

    1 Abr 2007, 21:21 de aikakone

    As a bass player of just over two years, I am listening more closely to the bass parts in the music around me. The first bass player that really grabbed my attention once I had been playing the instrument was Nigel Griggs who is most known to people as the bassist in Split Enz from 1977-1984, when the band broke up.

    Since listening to him, I have also realized that I rather like bass parts in much of the 80s music and that I like players with some aggression. That is not to say that I want to hear bassists who are all about chops and not serving the music. That's boring.

    Anyhow, a song this week that grabbed my attention as a good bass song is Maneater. I have known the song for a while, but it had been a long time since I've heard it. The instrumentation of the song is sparse, and I doubt people realize that it's mostly drums and bass because there is minimal guitar or keyboards. Much of the interest in teh song is created by the saxophone.

  • The Tour T-Shirt Post

    I'm feeling a little bit random and was thinking about the t-shirts I've collected over the years. Plus I was just curious how much money I'd wasted too. *g*

    1. Split Enz - The "Snot" Shirt (most Enz fans will know which one I mean).
    I managed to get this signed at the stage door this year by Nigel Griggs, Eddie Rayner and Mal Green. Mal somehow managed to sign it on the wrong side just below the armpit. May have been as a result of a little "over-indulgence" of the alcoholic variety..... guess I'll never know, but it's certainly a talking point.

    2. Split Enz - Corroboree World Tour 1981
    I spotted this at my first Finn Brothers gig last year and thought it was awesome. I wore it to Homebake and was pulled over by a beefy Maori bouncer as I was leaving and I freaked thinking he was going to do a strip-search for drugs or something.... but instead he just goes "Hey, whered'ya get that Split Enz T-Shirt? It's wicked mate!!"

  • Come on Eddie if you please, play that bridge on the ivories

    Time for a very long and hopefully interesting take on Friday night's Split Enz gig in Sydney. X-posted from LiveJournal cause I'm a lazy sod.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Rhett and I arrived at the Ent Centre at about 6 in order to have time for dinner and a couple of drinks beforehand. Somehow I managed to scrape a vegetarian meal out of McDonalds (I'd rather not know what they fry their chips in. Ignorance is bliss.) and we headed for the bar/bistro across the road for an Absinthe shot. It was about 7 and we decided to make our way in so that the good merchandise didn't sell out.
    I stared at the infamous snot shirt with longing, but showed amazing restraint and walked away with only the black Spellbound tour t-shirt and a pack of Enz badges. I went to the bathroom to change into the t-shirt and came back to find Rhett had bought two t-shirts - a red True Colours and the snot shirt. I asked him why he got two shirts and he said he didn't - then handed the snot one to me and said it was mine. …
