Dos álbumes, un EP y un single es el escaso legado artístico que nos ha dejado Jeff Mangum y sus Neutral Milk Hotel antes de desvanecerse. Su leyenda se hace mayor cada año que pasa, siendo reivindicado por artistas de toda clase (desde Arcade Fire hasta Animal Collective pasando por Devendra Banhart o Franz Ferdinand) y con una masa de fans cada vez más grande. Quizás sea esa leyenda la que provoca que Jeff Mangum rechace la opción de volver a los escenarios junto a sus compañeros en la banda: Jeremy Barnes, Scott Spillane y Robert Schneider (productor de sus dos álbumes).
Procedentes de Athens y encuadrados dentro de la comunidad The Elephant 6 Recording Company (junto a bandas amigas como The Olivia Tremor Control o The Apples in Stereo), la primera referencia discográfica de Neutral Milk Hotel es del año 1994 con el single “Everything Is” (posteriormente reeditado y ampliado a EP). Una primera piedra de toque donde se une la psicodelia con el folk en un estilo pretendidamente lo fi. El siguiente paso será editar su primer álbum en el año 1996. Fue “On Avery Island” y supone una mejora considerable respecto a lo grabado anteriormente. La psicodelia folk lo fi continúa ahí, pero de una manera mejorada y con cierto toque experimental. Además, las letras alucinadas de Jeff Mangum son cada vez mejores. Este disco esconde algunos de los primeros clásicos de la banda como Song Against Sex o Naomi.
Y llega el año 1998 con la publicación de su mejor obra: “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea”.
