Después de 2 años en la universidad Dave Cook se sentía sin inspiración. Dejó los libros y volvió a Fairfax, Virginia para formar My Favorite Highway con su primo Will Cook, en Enero del 2005. «Escribimos algunas canciones y pasó que todos parecían amarlas. No sabíamos que pensar, era como un suertudo accidente.» dice Dave. Con su único, púlido sonido y su simpática imagen, My Favorite Highway rápidamente capturó el corazón de su escena local pretendiendo hacer lo mismo con el resto del país.
La banda entró en los estudios en el verano del 2006 para hacer 5 tracks nuevos con Barber. Sacaron el EP con 5 canciones, «Anywhere But Here» en Noviembre del 2006. El nuevo EP fue muy bien recibido, vendiendo 3000+ CD’s, y 60,000+ sencillos hasta la fecha.
