Mott the hoople fue una de las bandas británicas más interesantes del genero hard rock-glam a finales de los sesenta y principios de los setenta. El grupo, compuesto por los excelentes instrumentistas Overend Pete Watts (bajista), Dale “Buffin” Griffin (batería), Verden Allen (teclados), y dos genios poco valorados en aquella época: Ian Hunter, vocalista y teclista y Mick Ralphs en la guitarra, responsables en gran medida de la gran fuerza creativa de sus composiciones. Hunter, líder de la banda,fuertemente influenciado por Bob Dylan, fue el último miembro en unirse a una banda de orígenes inciertos y constante inestabilidad, llamada en un principio “ Silence” con Stan Tippens como líder, aunque después serñia desplazado por desacuerdos con el productor Guy Stevens, y cambiando después a “Mott the hoople”, en honor a la novela del escritor Willard Manus publicada en 1966.
Mott the Hoople» (1969) sería su primer disco, si bien, interesante al incluir covers de los Kinks entre otros, no tendría mayor éxito. De suerte parecida fue «Mad Shadows» (1970), su segundo disco, mientras que «Wildlife» (1971) y «Brian Capers» (1972) fueran peor en ventas, aunque innegablemente mejorando en calidad y madurez musical.
Con cuatro discos en su haber hasta ese momento, letras ingeniosas y corrosivas unidas a una fuerte guitarra, la banda tuvo un éxito mediano y fue injustamente ignorada consiguiendo malas ventas.
