  • 2009 - The Year in Review part II: The best albums

    18 Dic 2009, 18:16 de borntohang

The best thing about this time of the year is not christmas, not new years, not the snow... It's making these lists! And especially the album lists is quite enjoyable. And despite going through the year with a great deal of loathing and contempt for new music (I'm referring to new hyped bands mostly) I still managed to find some extraordinary stuff. So without further ado...

    1. Thåström - Kärlek är för dom

    - One of the two best artists/musicmakers in the history of music made what could very well be the best album of his 30 year old career. Beauty and disturbance in perfect harmony.
Best track: Kort biografi med litet testamente

    2. Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem

    - The most original songwriter of his generation (MY generation!)? I'd think twice before defying that. And this album is just further proof. Existential angst set to gorgeous music in a huge and desolate forest.
    Best track: Through the Trees

    3. Kent - Röd

    - One of the most important bands in my musical upbringing followed 2007's pretty uneven (yet still underrated) Tillbaka Till Samtiden with this. A cold, despairing yet angry AND loving album with nothing but strong tracks and some of Jocke Berg's best lyrics of all time.
    Best track: Svarta linjer

    4. The Mary Onettes - Islands

    - Probably the best young band in Sweden released their most accomplished album this fall. This is pure beauty, melancholy and atmosphere.
Best track: God Knows I Had Plans

    5. a-ha - Foot Of The Mountain

    - The most underrated band of all time? Well, probably in the top 5 at least. Their first in four years and the best one they've made since 1986. It also turned out to be their last. They announced their split earlier this fall. A great shame, I must say.
Oh, and they brought back the synthesizers!
    Best track: : Shadowside

    6. Morrissey - Years of Refusal

    - Far from his best stuff, but still better than most bands albums, simply because it is Morrissey. The timeless, brilliant and magical Morrissey. The most important musical force in my entire life, alongside Thåström.
And if this album is flawed in any way, it's his co-writers that should be held responsible (all but the great Alain Whyte, of course). Because Mozzer delivers great lyrics and some superb vocal melodies. As always. But the music may lack a bit...
Best track: A tie between EscucharWhen Last I Spoke to Carol and EscucharYou Were Good in Your Time

    7. Richard Hawley - True Love's Gutter

    - A bit of a premature entry, but I can't help it. I fell in love at first listen. Had I been listening for a longer time it would've been much higher I reckon.

Best track: EscucharAshes On The Fire

    8. Maria Taylor - LadyLuck

    - A career best for this angelic voice. Fine lyrics about heartbreak and moving on steeped in a beautiful american folk guitar sound.
    Best track: EscucharBroad Daylight

    9. The Leisure Society - The Sleeper

    - Another premature entry, but yet again it was love at first listen. Quite english, very beautiful, very melancholic. AND with good lyrics. I'm shocked beyond comprehension that a debuting band can make music like this, in this awful day and age.
Best track: The Last Of The Melting Snow

    10. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

    - Kate Bush for this era. The female Patrick Wolf. Worn-out clichés perhaps, but very true. But what is more relevant and true is the fact that Bat for lashes actually makes great music. Interesting music. And the fact that she invited none other than the great Scott Walker to sing with her on the closing track only shows that she is someone to be counted on.
    Best track: EscucharDaniel

Well. There you have it. The best of 2009. Overall a weak year, but obviously not without moments of bliss.

  • Wanted: live or alive?

    17 Dic 2009, 7:50 de rachieinacoma

I don't love live albums. Somehow the shriek of ecstatic fans just make me all the more aware that I have missed out on yet another musical opportunity. It grates on my nerves and takes away from any shreds of enjoyment that I may have derived from the music itself - with two exceptions only:
Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey and Morrissey live at Earles Court.
Those two have enough charisma and talent to shine through the fans noisome pestilence, to take me out of my pathetic disappointment and back into the songs. The fact that they sound even better live is a rarity in the few live recordings I have given any time to and as such, justify what I would otherwise class as a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the live music experience itself, just the recordings.
I think live music is absolutely a spectrum of wonderfuls - and endless possibilities for amazing polaroid like moments to relive for years to come. The thing I love the most about it is the fact that people gather together , traveling great distances sometimes to leave their differences at the door - their race, religion, postcodes, likes, dislikes... They willingly share a room with a bunch of strangers and their sweat to bond over their common appreciation for a band or artist. Then they share hours in this haze of enjoyment and music and lights and they each have their own unique experience - so all at once, in this room/hall/stadium there are hundreds/thousands of universes just registering their own little nuances and moments whilst enjoying the same beats and sounds simultaneously, and yet taking something different away from it all at once. It's incredible. Perhaps they don't all think as deeply on it as I do - but no live show is ever going to be exactly the same, regardless of the set list. And the chances of the crowd on any one particular night, ever managing to meet all under the same roof again are unlikely to say the least. Music unites the people. I'm sure I've said it before. It brings us together, we just don't always realise it. It's our glue.
Yes, I'm the wide eyed freak gazing around hopelessly looking narcotized but buzzing purely off the romantic notion of being IN the moment. Ugh.
I think the idea of recording these moments is futile and the wonderment of the original and precious minutes during and between songs can never be translated through any other medium than the present. It's just an inappropriate and poor second option to experience it recycled in time. It's not just because I feel I've missed out, it's in respect to the music. We all know we can't have the same euphoria that the moment and the music grants to the fan in the crowd - so why try? We should just make more of an effort to not miss out. We all know what happens when we try to relive Woodstock (= colossal failure).
So in the spirit of live music and my opposition to live recordings here is my list of the top 5 artists I would happily gnaw off my arm to see live but for a myriad of possible reasons, have not yet done so:

    1. Kate Bush - she's amazing. She's fearless in her music and her art and the craft of self expression. I'm in awe of her.
    2. Sonic Youth - blow my mind continually, via recordings. I can only imagine their energy live. Plus the bragging rights would give way to street cred I've only ever dreamed about.
    3. David Bowie - because I love him. For the music.
4.Tom Waits - the man is intense and irrevocably intriguing. and a musical genius. And he growls like an unearthly mystical creature of the night.
    5. Jimi Hendrix - the obsession never fades. He was my first real music infatuation and he opened up my mind, musically.

Special mentions go to the following:
Weezer - because I know I could sing along with the best of them and I'm certain at a Weezer show I could make at least 5 new friends.
Joni Mitchell - because no one can write a song like she can.
    Morrissey - needs no explanation.
Stevie Wonder - the man is Love and so is his music.
Oh Mercy because I only just discovered them and am subsequently in love with. Can't stop playing the album Priveliged Woes

I could gladly go on but I'd like to make it clear that there isn't' any music that I love, which I wouldn't want to see live. Or music which I don't love that I wouldn't be open to seeing if money and time were no factor. Although I would never EVER go to see Empire of The Sun live, even though I rather like the album Walking On A Dream. Because Luke Steele is just... well, he's an absolute toss.

Disclaimer: All lists are subject to change with varying hormonal levels, general moodiness, new cd purchases and the such, as I feel it is certainly my right to do so, and as author of this journal entry, I of course get to make the rules. I'd also like to mention that I would have loved to have added Mr Michael Jackson (may he rest in peace) but did not want to desecrate his memory by jumping on the ever popular and rather heavy posthumous bandwagon.

  • the finest albums of 2009

    16 Dic 2009, 5:07 de therewasatime

hi, i'm not too good at introducing these, so i'll start with a poem:

another year has come and past,
and the tunes this year have been a blast
this is my list; the cream of the crop
so let's see what album ends up on top!

    (sorry)

    10)Morrissey - Years of Refusal

steven patrick's most recent offering (aside from the b-side collection Swords, which i'll be coming back to later in the best tracks of the year) is a fantastic rock n' roll record. yes, lots of hard (cock?) rock guitar + sometimes painful lyrics (come on, moz. the lyrics in EscucharI'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris are fucking awful.) BUT you just gotta have fun with it.

    9)The Horrors - Primary Colours

after a whole lot of musical growth since their debut Strange House, the band has taken cues from The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and The Cure to throw together a fantastic sophomore release.

8)The Thermals - Now We Can See

i actually just bought the album like...two months ago. but it's really good. When I Died is a great opener, up to par (i'd say) with EscucharHere's Your Future off The Body, The Blood, The Machine, although i'm sure no one else will agree with me on that.

7)Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything To Nothing

no one else likes this band, but fuck them. andy hull + co's sophomore release is almost too clean sounding, especially when compared with Like A Virgin Loosing A Child, but the songs as a whole are so much stronger. the riff in Pride is up to par with the best from Led Zeppelin. holla.

    6)Japandroids - Post-Nothing

i originally dismissed the band as pitchfork wank, HOWEVER, post-nothing is actually a fantastic debut. the album is chock full of wonderful guitars, energetic drums and the songs have more hooks than there are fish in the sea. super fun and highly recommended.

5)The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

fuck pitchfork for hating on this album. not as good as Picaresque, but it's not really trying to be. instead of focusing on great individual songs, the band proves here that the sum is greater than the parts. hazards a sprawling 17 song album about love and death. and metal.

    4)Silversun Pickups - Swoon

if i didn't know better, i'd think it's 1992. harkening back to the lush sounds of Loveless and Siamese Dream with updated riffage, silversun pickups managed to put together a pretty solid release. bonus track Ne Plus Ultra is better than the entire b-side of the album.

    3)Cursive - Mama, I'm Swollen

one ofSaddle Creek's flagship bands, cursive continues to make great music years into their career. a monstrous improvement from the lackluster Happy Hollow and bolstering songs like From The Hips, I Couldn't Love You, Caveman and the epic what have i done?[/track], cursive shows the doubters that they can still pack a punch.

    2)M. Ward - [album artist=m. ward]hold time

fuck yeah folk. matt's second best album, only topped by Post-War, shows that his songwriting post She & Him (sartist]zooey deschanel still pops up on two tracks) is still fantastic. the production is pristine and his guitar work (as if anyone doubted) is second to none.

    1)The Antlers - Hospice

i'm not too original for having this on the top of my list; as many others already have and many more will, but the album deserves as much recognition as possible.

there's not much i can really say that hasn't already been said about this album already. epic, beautiful, heartbreaking; the album hasn't gotten any less desolate and stunning since i first listened to it, and i doubt it will.

  • the year has come and gone and i'm going to list my favorite albums

    16 Dic 2009, 2:22 de dontmakemeatrgt

actually it's only december 15th, but i'm pretty sure there aren't any notable releases coming up in the next few weeks, so i'll just put this shit out now.

Ten: Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

While my love this album has waned, I still can recognize how great of an achievement it is, and in the day that I loved it, it was mad love. Cannibal Resource is a perfect summery song.

Nine:The Twilight Sad - Forget The Night Ahead

Maybe you're the sort of person who laughs at accents in songs. If you are, avoid this. An excellent sophomore effort by this band out of Glasgow.

Eight: toe - FOR LONG TOMORROW

Wow! WHAT A FANTASTIC ALBUM THAT MAKES ME CALM ON BAD DAYS. The drumming on this is fantastic, as is the finger picked guitar. really nice! first album i've ever heard by toe.

    Seven:Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

Absolutely brilliant album and very consistent all the way through. isn't as good as yellow house, but i don't think many expected it to be. oh and Southern Point is a fantastic album opener.

    Six:Wilco - Wilco (The Album)

After the sort of disappointment that was Sky Blue Sky (except for the fact that Walken, Hate It Here, and Impossible Germany are all fantastic songs), Wilco has come back with a great album that takes a bit of every previous Wilco album and slaps it into a great ALBUM WITH A CAMEL ON THE ALBUM COVER. HOLY FUCK, THAT IS PROBABLY THE ALBUM COVER OF THE YEAR.

It's no Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Summerteeth , but dammit I'll take it. And anyone who say's that You And I isn't the sweetest or most adorable they've ever heard, is a liar.

FIVE. WE'RE HALF WAY DONE: Morrissey - Years of Refusal

Oh Moz, where do we begin. I guess the first thing to say is that this is filled with a ton of cock rock guitar, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Does it pale in comparison to early Morrissey albums? YES.

Is it not as good as You Are The Quarry? YES.

However, it's still really damn good, and filled with self depreciation and disgust for our modern world.

Four: The Thermals - Now We Can See

Pop-punk, and actually really good. I Called Out Your Name is the best song easily. Easy to throw on whenever and just listen to. Not quite as punk-y as The Body, The Blood, The Machine

    Three: Caspian - Tertia

Fantastic Post-Rock. I hope these guys get a ton of recognition on some end of the year lists.

Two: The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

Oh cool what a surprise, Jon has the latest D's album as one of his top 5 of the year. JUSTIFY IT PLEASE?

Alright. Basically, if you look at previous Decemberists albums, it was pretty apparent they had to put out a full fledged rock-opera. It could've gone either way really, and in the end it was pretty shocking to see Colin and co., not fuck this one up. It somehow blends folk and metal together into a nifty hour long package. Oh, also having a few fantastic guest vocalists doesn't hurt much. It was incredible to see the band perform the album in its entirety.

NUMBER ONE OF THE YEAR OMG: The Antlers - Hospice

The first time I ever listened to The Antlers was on a mix tape somebody had made for me. The song EscucharKettering was featured on it, and I was immediately intrigued because of it's gloominess. I was then linked to their album Hospice and holy fuck it blew me away

and it still does every time I listen. I'm not sure if in 50 years it'll be regarded as a classic album, but it damn well deserves it.

The 10 best songs of the year, however:

10: The Decemberists - The Wanting Comes In Waves/Repaid

9: Grizzly Bear - Fine for Now

    8: Caspian - Sycamore

7: Wilco - Bull Black Nova

6: Tortoise - EscucharHigh Class Slim Came Floatin' In

5: Animal Collective - Brother Sport

4: Morrissey - EscucharSomething Is Squeezing My Skull

    3:The Antlers - EscucharEpilogue

    2:Dirty Projectors - Cannibal Resource

    1: The Twilight Sad - I Became A Prostitute

Conclusion: Merriweather Post Pavillion wasn't as good as I thought initially.
