Artista nativo de Nueva Jersey, inspirado inicialmente por el sonido inglés que se escuchaba en Detroit. Sus primeros artistas favoritos fueron Devo, Severed Heads y New Order, además del hip hop de la vieja escuela, el jazz y soundtracks de los años ‘60. Geist lanzó su primer sencillo mientras estudiaba en el Oberlin College en 1994, por medio de la firma Metamorphic de Dan Curtin. Formó Environ un poco después, lanzando sencillos que mostraban su afinidad por los géneros del disco, tecno y soul principalmente. Su album debut se editó en 1997 y fué licenciado por Eastwest/Warner.
Hasta la fecha, Geist sigue manejando Environ, ademas de ser un reconocido remixer y productor, ya sea solo o siendo parte del proyecto Metro Area, Geist ha puesto su toque personal a una gran variedad de artistas como Hugh Masekela, Telex, Erlend Øye y The Rapture.
