I think this album might be singlehandedly responsible for getting me to start to seriously listen to music. And I still think it's brilliant.

First album I heard by Modest Mouse, and one of the first albums I heard that broke me away from mainstream pop and rap, so this record holds a special affinity for me. I definitely love their older material more, but this remains my favorite MM album. Not to ramble on about my life, but honestly, I owe this album a lot (along with Fever to Tell). I was completely unfamiliar with any rock that my parents didn't listen to. I just stuck to Missy Elliott and Nelly, looool. Then this. Good memories. NOSTALGIA

I think I've been too harsh on this album. When I don't compare it to old MM, and judge it on its own terms, it's very very good. It doesn't annoy me as much anymore.

I can totally respect the people who like this album, but I can't for the life of me get into it. This was my first MM album, yet it only has a few plays. Every time Ocean Breathes Salty or Bury Me With It or The View comes up on shuffle I think, "Hey this is actually a great song! I should give Good News another try." Then I force myself through it and I can't stand it. I even like We Were Dead better. A lot better. I don't even know what it is about this that I don't like... Maybe it's just because Jeremiah is absent? Or maybe it's because it's the only album that doesn't have an overarching theme/atmosphere?

This album is good, it's not on the level with their other stuff but it's still a damn good album. Bands change their sound, it happens, even though Modest Mouse has been getting more and more poppy doesn't mean that they're bad, it just means they're getting more poppy. It hasn't taken away from the music at all, they're still original and on a level that most bands that have had the success that Modest Mouse has can't even touch because they're trying to appeal. Hell, even if this was a commercial attempt it's still a pretty damn good one. [3]

this is the first album that I heard from them not knowing almost anything about Modest Mouse and albums like The Moon&Antarctica or The Lonseme Crowded West.....and I fkn fell in love with that album from the first listen! And then I listened to M&A and yeah..it is perfect, but that doesn't mean that everything after it sucks...the last two albums are just different, but it's still Modest Mouse. Get rid of these ''the band went mainstream'' stereotypes. I fkn hate it.

I find this album gets annoying and rather difficult to sit through almost halfway or so.

Bored stiff's little story about this album and their recent sound is pretty spot in my opinion. I admire MM's earliest stuff the most, just because it's their talent in the rawest form, but I think that these recent albums are really worthwhile if you have an open mind. There's loads of good songs on here, and these days I probably listen to this/The Fruit that Ate Itself/half of We Were Dead more frequently then the earlier stuff.

I think this is a good starting point to start Modest Mouse's discography. I loved "Oceans...", then Bukowski and then One Chance, etc... When i realized i was listening without problems their just awesome The Lonesome Crowded West.

@shanespear - you're not musically retarded, music taste is subjective, if you think this is better than m&a, then it is better. taste is a superficial and showy thing, like what you want, no need to insult yourself b/c other people think otherwise.

This isn't my favorite by them, but it's the one I probably most consitently listen to. It can be their best if you give it an objective chance.
