El productor Matt Serletic, recién habiendo terminado de ayudar en convertir a «Shine» de Collective Soul en una pieza imprescindible para MTV, conoció un tipo llamado Rob Thomas, un escritor habilidoso de Orlando que estaba buscando un lugar. Serletic y Thomas probaron músicos en busca de un par de personas que podían apoyar la obvia habilidad de Thomas de escribir buena música de pop. Thomas, nacido en Alemania como hijo de militares, ya había tocado con el baterista Paul Doucette y el bajista Brain Yale en varias bandas locales. Ellos ya estaban. Adam Gaynor y Kyle Cook, dos guitarristas capaces de empujar el sonido de la banda en todas las apropiadas direcciones, pronto siguieron. Matchbox Twenty era ahora una unidad completa y lista para meterse en el estudio.
Con Serletic al mando y las mejores canciones de Thomas en cassette, en octubre de 1996 la banda lanzó «Yourself or Someone Like You», una poderosa mezcla de canciones de pop con letras socialmente relevantes que encajaban de alguna manera entre el rock clásico y el moderno. Se fueron de tour en apoyo al álbum y en poco tiempo llegó su primer éxito: el lanzamiento individual de debut «Push» llegó a la radio.
Matchbox Twenty se hizo la perfecta banda de rock para radios, eran lo suficientemente melódicos para escuchar, lo suficientemente pesados para el rock y lo suficientemente sexy para cruzar las barreras demográficas.
