La fuerza pionera que hay detrás del nacimiento del trip-hop, Massive Attack, estaban entre las bandas más innovadoras y con más influencia de su generación. Su sonido hipnótico marcó muchas de las pautas a seguir de la música dance de los noventa allanando el camino para grupos tales como Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, y Tricky.
Su historia comienza en 1983 con la formación del grupo Wild Bunch… , uno de los colectivos pioneros del sound-system/DJ que llegó al Reino Unido; célebres por su perfecta integración de un amplio espectro de estilos musicales, del punk al reggae al R&B, pronto los conciertos del grupo se convirtieron en un evento indispensable en el Bristol club.
Cuando Wild Bunch se disolvió en los ochentas, dos de sus miembros -Andrew «Mushroom» Vowles y Grant «Daddy G» Marshall- se unieron al graffitero 3D (Robert del Naja) para formar Massive Attack en 1987; otro componente de Wild Bunch, Nellee Hooper, se repartió su tiempo entre el nuevo grupo y su otro proyecto, Soul II Soul. El primer single del grupo, «

Daydreaming,» vió la luz en 1990; con la voz tan característica del cantante Shara Nelson y repeos hechos por Tricky, otro colaborador de Wild Bunch. El clásico «

Unfinished Sympathy» le siguió y tomaron otro gran impulso con, «

Safe From Harm.
