Major Organ and the Adding Machine se rumoreaba que era un proyecto paralelo de Jeff Mangum y Julian Koster, ambos pertenecientes a Neutral Milk Hotel.Ellos reversionaron el tema «What a Wonderful World» de Louis Armstrong que fue incluido en un compilado de Kindercore Records llamado «Christmas in Stereo»en 1997.Sin embargo la banda creció y muchos otros miembros del colectivo Elephant 6 colaboraron en la grabación de su álbum debut homónimo (y único) con sonido puramente experimental y lo-fi en el año 2001. «Major Organ» se dice que es el aparente líder del grupo, pero muchos piensan que se trata de un personaje ficticio. Algunos músicos del colectivo Elephant 6 que colaboraron en este misterioso proyecto de Mangum y Koster fueron : Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) , Eric Harris (Olivia Tremor Control), Will Cullen Hart (The Circulatory System, The Olivia Tremor Control) y Andrew Rieger (Elf Power).
