At first listen I hated the new album. I even ignored it until just few days ago. I don't know what I was thinking. Phantom Shadow is amazing! Some tracks on it are among their best.

Beyond Good and Evil, Versus and Hubnester Rising are among the bands best songs. If you don't like these three songs I don't see how could you be a fan of the bands previous work anyway.

Their Operation:Mindricrime videogame port works well. The songs aren't that good, but the whole concept gives it somewhat ingenious touch. I love it.

The gig at St. Petersburg was awesome! 2nd time I see MaSU live, and I'm just cant wait for the next one. These guys just rocks, unbelievable and priceless expirience! Next time they visit Russia I'm totally gonna be there, no doubt. And, btw, new stuff from Phantom Shadow surprisingly sounds pretty damn good

Couldn't get into the new one, sorry guys. Just too overstuffed with longer songs that don't go anywhere interesting. Not enough electronics either. "The Bigger They Are the Harder They Fall" rules divine but that is about it..

And sure, you can argue that the west doesn't have the right to enforce the desire for happiness, compassion and empathy on the rest of the world, and to a certain extent I agree. Certainly to the point where I think it's wrong to invade other countries and overthrow their government. But I don't think it's wrong to apply political pressure in order to spread peaceful laws within other governments. And the reason for that is once again, because of the desired outcome of unity and prosperity. Not just for one country, but for all countries. For us as a species. And if we as a specias are to survive, then we NEED that unity and prosperity.

It seems to me that the viewpoint that you're advocating for is absolute cultural relativism. Which is something that I do not ascribe to. Culture is like politics and other ideologies. It can be observed objectively and one can deduce what works best and what doesn't, based on certain desired outcomes. And if that desired outcome is happiness, empathy and compassion, then once again, human rights is what works best. And that should be the desired outcome, because that is what creates the most harmony within society. And the more harmony there is within a society, the more that society will flourish and prosper.

You are indeed correct about what you say. Here's the thing, though, human rights is like democracy. Out of all the things tried, it's the one that works the best. If one's goal is to live in a society of freedom where all people are as happy as possible, then human rights is the way to go. And I think that that's what most people want, even if they may object to various aspects of it, due to whatever that may cloud their mind -- such as religion.

After Hitler it was difficult to promote those ideas as a pure racial segregation so instead of White, Yellow and Black now we have Civilization, Barbarians and Savages and the fact that Barbarians are better than Savages and Civilization is better than Barbarians is accepted as an axiom. Thus Civilization in its own eyes acquires the right to ‘civilize’ Barbarians and Savages, part of which all this ‘human rights’ idea is. There’s a wonderful book on this topic by Professor John M. Hobson called ‘The Eurocentric Conception of World Politics’.

    Octubre 2014
  • Meat_Wolf

Human rights is an exclusive Western concept which has nothing to do with how other nations perceive ‘human’ or ‘rights’. South America, Asia, Africa, Islamic world don’t want ‘human rights’. Still this concept is being continuously forced on everyone on this planet. It’s not up to 10% to decide how the other 90% should live but that’s exactly what happens (same is true for the so-called Anglo-Saxon democracy by the way). Truth is, this is just another disguise for Western colonialism which was previously called The White Man's Burden.

Surely you can justify that last remark?

    Octubre 2014
  • Meat_Wolf

My explanation here would look messed up anyway because it's like explaining rocket engine design which you don't understand much yourself with sticks (also it's difficult to talk this topic in English to me because I don't know the right terms names). I've spent almost a year even approaching this whole concept via other works and interpretations and even now I just get the basics of it. He explained it much better and I'm not the best person to translate his ideas so, just read if you're interested. He's called the Prince of Philosophers for a reason after all. P.S. Human rights is thousand times more of an ignorant superstition than faith or any other pre-modern concept.

  • Syndicaidramon

And "forsake what 'human' means"? How so? And what does that even mean?

    Octubre 2014
  • Syndicaidramon

Lowest point of existence? Seems rather iffy, seeing as we are only now transcending beyond our ignorant superstitions and prejudices towards those that are different. Human rights are at an all time high, and are progressing more and more throughout the world. The world is becoming an easier place to live, as more countries develop. Sure, there are hardships today, and sure there are problems that are exclusive to modern society and technology, but to say that we're hitting an all time low point in our existence... sorry, but I don't see it. Sounds like technophobic fearmongering to me...

He explains this with the disintegration of Western Logos, the first beginning of philosophy that started with Pre-Socratic era, Heraclitus, Plato and Aristotle and ended with Nietzsche (he calls Nietzsche the last philosopher). He tries to uncover what was hidden below that first beginning (introducing the concept of Dasein) and then suggests to start building The Other Beginning in which we should answer the central question of philosophy, the question about being, in another way, not like it was done in the first beginning because it led us to disaster represented in the triumph of Gestell, technology.

I guess 1000 letters would be really not enough for that. In short, if you read Heidegger's Sein und Zeit and Beiträge zur Philosophie (or better someone who can interprete those because I think our generation is unable to work with such sources anymore, not enough basic knowledge) you will find out he thinks we live in the darkest times and we can't even realize it's dark because we already forgot what light was. We still believe in progress, objective reality, science and all the other modern time paradigm features but in fact it's just a grand illusion and we're about to hit the lowest point of existence and forsake what 'human' means.

    Octubre 2014
  • Syndicaidramon

    V Could you elaborate?

    Octubre 2014
  • Meat_Wolf

I used to agree with their view but some recent philosophical researches I read especially concerning Martin Heidegger turned it all upside down. It's merely a hypnotic suggestion of modern period paradigm.

    Octubre 2014
  • MachineAnimal

    Probably both interpretations are right.

    Octubre 2014
  • Syndicaidramon

Thanks. Though I forgot that another interpretation could be a critique of religion in itself, and its effect on society due to the acts committed by believers, and how society would be a better place without it. An angle that I personally agree with 100%. It could also be both. Of course, both of these interpretations could just be me projecting and that it is none of those things, but those are the interpretations that I personally find the most likely.

In my experience, coupled with the fact that they are swedish, it is most likely the Judeo-Christian God. I.e. the god of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. And considering the that the members of the band (or at least Robert) are atheists, then it seems most likely that it's a metaphorical jab at the monotheistic religions. Pointing out that Yahweh, the way he is portrayed in the scriptures, is a horrible, horrible being.

I dunno, it seems like a somewhat thin subject to me, I don't even fully understand what they truly mean; are they referring to the biblical character? or just a whatever God confronted with the suffering in this world? Is God's existence implemented or not?

    Octubre 2014
  • Syndicaidramon

Can't say I agree. Sure, the "God is an evil character" schtick is one that has been done before (and rightfully so), but I find their delivery to be spot on and not at all tired. Not as much anger in it as much as just pointing out in horror and sadness what a horrible entity he is. Which is not that common in my experience. I dunno, I really like it.

Persona is one of my fave MaSu songs. I like Shinigami a lot too. Most MaSu songs are growers which I think is always a good thing. There is always a lot to like in the songs at first listen too though..

The lyrics are probably the thing that bothers me the most about "Remnant"; I'm far from a religious person but that sounds like the same tired anti-religious rethoric I've already heard a billion times, it feels juvenile to me.

    Septiembre 2014
  • Syndicaidramon

Persona is one of my fave tracks on that album. I dig "Remnant..." too, but mostly because it's so blatantly anti-religious. :P In regards to loving this band... most fans of this band has thought that as well I believe. Me included. This band is one of those bands that usually doesn't hit very well initially, but that gets increasingly better the more you listen to them.

Again, a decent album but way, way too many forgettable tracks. Most of the choruses just lack punch. It's an enjoyable band but I don't think I'll ever truly love them.

"Action Girl" is one of my faves on that album. If it had any tracks that were a bit more on the meh side, I'd say it'd be "Shinigami", "Indiscriminate Murder is Counter-Productive" and "Crouching Camber Hidden Sniper"...
