Influenced by the songwriting classicism of piano men Elton John, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and neo-soul star John Legend, Mêlée present their own style of carefully crafted melodic pop on Devils & Angels, the quartet’s debut album for Warner Bros. Records, which will be released on April 3rd. The songs, which range from driving pop-rock anthems to uplifting power ballads, are characterized by solid hooks, lilting melodies, and frontman Chris Cron’s soaring vocals and expressive piano-playing.
On tracks like first single, «Built to Last,» Mêlée display a grown-up songcraft, one with an unabashed emotionalism uncommon in young bands these days. Upon first listen, Devils & Angels may sound like an album full of relationship songs, but dig deeper and you’ll find reflections on «getting in fights with friends, songs about friends coming home from college and not being able to get jobs,» says Cron. «The album is about being in your ’20s in modern America. It’s about our experiences right now - with life, love, friends - and asking questions about where we’re going and what’s going to happen. That’s the whole theme.»
Adds guitarist Ricky Sans: «There are obviously several really optimistic love songs, but others have to do with problems that our friends and loved ones were going through.» «Imitation» deals with one of Sans’ girlfriends finding out that her sister was schizophrenic. «I was carrying a lot of weight dealing with this broken family who were being torn apart by all this crazy stuff,» he says. «And the song is about how there’s nothing you can do but hope for the best and be there for the people in your life.»

Saw their holiday videos, and remembered how much I loved this band. Such a nice mix of pop/soul/rock. Chris' vocals have really improved, too. Can't wait for the new album, and hopefully they will tour again soon.

I do like Everyday Behavior and all of the EPs they've released before Devils & Angels, their lyrics definitely appear to be more down-to-earth and more relatable, at least, for me. But you definitely can't help but admit that they grew as musicians, and their musicianship and originality went beyond their limits. I wish their lyrics in Devils & Angels were as stellar as the one in Everyday Behavior, but I'm still impressed with this band, through and through. I can't wait until they're done with their album, they told me the sound is a mixture of Everyday Behavior and Devils & Angels, plus some new things. It's going to be great. :)
