Well hello 2012. You know what, I've been reading some of the previous years gig lists and its nice to remember so I'll have a go at keeping a diary on this thing again.

26th January - Lubomyr Melnyk at Cafe Oto.
You have no idea how excited I was to see this gig. An old boyfriend of mine played a gig with this guy in Estonia a few years ago and when he came back he was all like "you HAVE to hear him" and when I listened to his record Wave-Lox I can honestly say I've never before been so involved in a piece of music before, recorded or live. When I listen to Lubomyr I think fondly of sharing this with no one else except myself, selfish I know but this stuff is too good to share. Really though, this wasn't that hard to pull off because I honestly thought no one had heard of him apart from me (us) never mind owned a nice slab of vinyl containing his work (me, I went on to buy KHM off some dude in Denmark)
Imagine my surprise when I got outside Cafe Oto and there was a queue around the building…

    • James Blackshaw Interview

      1 Nov 2008, 20:54 de TheBlackPope

I did an interview with James Blackshaw recently, because James Blackshaw is about to play in Germany FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER.

He'll perfom in Krefeld at the Unrock Instore Gig (03.12.2008, for details go here: http://www.lastfm.de/event/802473).

      Here's the interview:

To Try And Do Something New And Not Recreate What's Been Done Before

      An Interview With James Blackshaw

Holger Adam: I read about four or five interviews with you published on the internet (of course) and I don't want to bother you again with all these questions about how you got to know John Fahey and Robbie Basho and then picked up the guitar to learn to play in this way/tradition and how you then got into minimal and modern composition (Steve Reich, La Monte Young, Terry Riley etc.), so if that's okay with you, then we'll skip that part and maybe we start our interview with a question about what'll happen in your near future.

You told me on the phone…

Busy as heck this week, so I have to rush through this.

      1 John Luther Adams 38
In the White Silence. What can I say about this record? This just might be my favorite late night listening album. It's close. This or A Data Learn the Language.

      2 Lubomyr Melnyk 30
Ah, Lubomyr. A true master of the minimal art of sounding simplistic on the surface, but so impossibly dense the more you dig through the layers. The fastest piano player I've heard? Maybe. Art Tatum would battle him.

      2 Atheist 30
Elements really isn't that bad! There has to be someone out there besides me that likes it.

      4 Béla Bartók 29
      String Quartet time!

      5 Yusef Lateef 28
Yusef might be one of the most underappreciated jazz players. I hardly ever see anyone chatting about this dude. Live at Pep's!

      6 Steve Reich 26
Really, what can I say that hasn't been said already?

7 Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers 21
Music that will make your soul feel good. …

      1 John Luther Adams 40
There did an interview with the dude on Allmusic a month or two back (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE4781DDD4AAA7320D5993E57C4A053FA06CA4EFB87126E495AD1A93358810A67F440A4C6C5AEF875B47EE3FD24A65905D1CEFE3681&sql=61::6;CC). He sort of comes off as a typically composer type (a little full of himself), but it's interesting none the less. I've been checking out his work when I get the chance (not often enough), but I still come back to In the White Silence. That whole album is just gorgeous and highly recommended to anyone that has a passing interest in Max Richter and other likeminded composers. I don't know what it is about the first song/album you hear from someone...why does that, nine times out of ten, forever remain your favorite?

      2 James Brown 23
I just did a blog about the guy. Go back to my main page and check out MP3 Blog #15. …

      Iannis Xenakis - Diamorphoses
Consider two things while listening to Iannis. 1) He was an architect and 2) Math shaped his music. Diamorphoses comes from the Electronic Music collection bringing together some of the best and most important work that Iannis composed not only for electronic music, but of any of his compositions (Chamber Music (1955-1990) is well worth owning as well). Oh, here's another thing to consider before you listen: this was recorded in 1957. I woke up this one night and I thought atoms were swirling around my head. It creates a very interesting dynamic with rumbling lows and those bell like highs. The lows seem to wind up, much like a jet engine for the songs first half, giving it drive, something that a lot of noise/ambient work lacks. Turn up your stereo and listen to this in the dark. Then marvel at the fact that this piece of musique concrète was recorded in 1957!
