    • 2010.05.29 - Next Music from Tokyo @ Whippersnapper Gallery

      31 May 2010, 1:24 de FinSquandrago

Sat 29 May – Next Music from Tokyo - vol 1

Okay, before really getting started, A NOTE TO BLOGGERS: Yes, bands from Japan are a bit of a novelty in Canada. Even so, if you can't write a paragraph about them without making a reference to bullet trains, Godzilla, sushi, "the land of the rising sun", geisha or Takashi Miike, YOU ARE A BAD, LAZY, UNIMAGINATIVE WRITER and the world would be a net-happier place if you were to be struck and killed by a moving fighter jet. That goes double if you conclude your show review with the words "domo arigato".

That said, I was expecting a frightening crowd last night — an all-ages show, on College, featuring Japanese bands? EEEEEEEEEK! — and things turned out brilliantly. Sure, there was one creepy guy in a "日本人彼女募集中" t-shirt — Seriously, dude, does that ever get you anything other than looks of pity or contempt? That one guy in IT who orders caffeinated mints from ThinkGeek who high-fived you doesn't count. …

    • Stuff I should listen to more / Albums I need to buy

      22 Nov 2009, 14:12 de blogpostar

Spring break is coming up, guys. Meaning, I will spend the next week watching anime, skiing, and above all, listening to music. There's a lot of music in my library that I still haven't properly listened to yet, or should listen to more considering how much I like it, and I'm going to make use of spring break to do so.
Stuff I still need to listen to more carefully:
      Limited Express (has gone?)
      VAST
      Fire In The Head
      Sickness
      Hijokaidan
      Lacrimas Profundere
      Bark Psychosis
      Ride

Stuff I need to listen to more:
      Melt-Banana (Speak Squeak Creak)
      world's end girlfriend
      Labradford
      Alien Sex Fiend
      Beati Mortui
      Bleeding Nature

Albums I need to buy on CD:
      Assassi-nation - 2 Bullet
      Strain - Flesh Field
      P O L A R I S - Exxasens
farewell kingdom - world's end girlfriend
Kore Ga Mayaku Da - Afrirampo

There's also my list of bands to check out, most of which have gone un-checked out:

    • TADA Newsletter No.4

      4 Ago 2008, 6:31 de jonniewilks

      Hi there!

We hope you're enjoying your summer. It's a roaster here in Fukuoka. We've had some great gigs this month, however, so it's more about reading matter than ear pleasures over on the TADA page this August.

That's not to say there's nothing going on for you hungry listeners. Our wonderful Tenniscoats friends have sent us a fantastic track called Turn that they'd like us to share with you - free of charge, naturally. It's part of the new album they co-created with SECAI, all of which we reviewed this morning on TADA. Get the review and the song here:

      http://tadamusic.org/en/node/298

And, just to prove that this really is the summer of Tenniscoats, we've got some more stuff on TADA for you, including an interview with Saya and a review of their recent Nokonoshima gig with Kazumi Nikaidoh (Nika Soup & Saya Source). Here are the links:

    • Jack and Jim Show, Kyoto Urbanguild, 6/15/08

      18 Jun 2008, 11:11 de djgizmoe

Sun 15 Jun – Eugene Chadbourne, Ultra Bide, Jimmy Carl Black, Shayne Bowden, DJ Duquette

Well, my big DJ night was at hand and a) I didn't have enough vinyl and b) my headphones were still AWOL. So with a fond farewell to the wife and hellspawn, I scootered downtown to do a little pre-gig shopping. Headphones was easy; I got a cheap pair of Audio-Technica for less than 2000 yen. As for records, I needed something a little obscure and classic rockie. First, I hit Tower, where despite myself I ended up picking up Doddodo's 2006 album (now in stock to capitalize on her new split with Limited Express (has gone?)), Otomo Yoshihide's new rock effort, Joy Heights and the newest LITE (all good). Then I checked the small place below what used to be Ace Cafe, and found..holy shit...only my favorite Fugs album ever, "It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest" for cheap. Sweet...

Then a little more confident, I headed to Urbanguild. The sound guy and owner were sorta milling about, discussing the evening's festivities…

    • Saiin Music Festival, 8/5/07

      20 Ago 2007, 2:02 de djgizmoe

Well in my further attempts to traumatize my bestest friend Keith and his son Austin on their trip to visit me in Kyoto, I took them on the Randen trolley ride down to Saiin for a gander at the second day of the music festival. Our first stop was the Longtail Spangle show inside the Randen garage. It turns out they were actually playing on a sort of hollowed out trolley car, the walls, ceiling and seats replaced with a stage. LS played well to the crowd of about 15 onlookers, but somebody REALLY needed to pump up the volume on the vocals, as they were almost entirely drowned out by the cavernous acoustics of the train garage.

After that we felt the need to beat the heat with a some ice coffee, so we headed to Starbucks (and to all you coffee snobs, there really aren't that many 'independent' options for coffee in Japan, so bugger off). The Chelseas were up with a sort of easy listening melodica pop, acceptable for Starbucks, I suppose. …

    • Saiin

      31 Jul 2007, 0:17 de djgizmoe

      Unedited Japanzine article:

      Saiin

So Kyoto isn’t really your bag, is it now? People too stuck up, food too bland, tired of the endless temples, shrines and self-proclaimed world heritage sites? Well, before you write off the whole shebang as one hellishly humid tourist trap, try Saiin. Located on the west side, the intersection of Shijo and Nishioji dori marks the heart of this tiny neighborhood, a semi-trashy entertainment district more than worthy of a night out or three. Sort of a “little Osaka” in the midst of conservative Kyoto, Saiin’s mix of working class stiffs, bohemian college kids and the occasional foreign lookie-loo (that would be me) marks a refreshing change of pace from the roaming gangs of kamikaze octogenarians and giggling junior high school groups you’re likely to encounter in other more well-known burgs.

      Ooh-La-La Monsieur
And what better place to start off an evening’s entertainment than at Ooh-La-La. …

    • Ultra Jr. and pals at Kyoto Ooh La La

      1 Jul 2007, 14:26 de djgizmoe

After four classes of grading mind-numbingly horrific presentations on cell phones, the Euro and "working holiday" visas, I was about ready to kill myself. Suddenly, during my second to last class, some IDIOT had the balls to call my cell in class. Turns out it was Hide (amazon saliva, Ultra Bide) asking me if I wanted to come hang with him at Ooh-La-La where he would be playing with his new band, ULTRA Jr. Although it was pushing my luck a bit with the wife, she didn't SEEM to mind (though the backlash was inevitable - and I don't want to talk about it...), so off I went to Saiin for the show on my bicycle. Stopping by IN, my now-favorite trashy streetside izakaya, I grabbed a quick deep-fried bite, before heading to the venue.

Ooh-La-La is a killer place, sorta a hippie motif with scarfy fabrics drooping from the ceiling and lots of tables. Hide was at the CD table slumming with Zach, who'd I'd met when he opened for Doddodo awhile back; I dropped of a copy of my new…
