1 The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
One would be hard pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground and Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting For The Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. …
18 Jul 2009, 14:31 de LlorenzaLed Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
The reason I started this 1001 albums project is because of my complete lack of knowledge about music before my age. Yes, I am a zero in that area. I know the names of famous artists, I know their most well known songs, because those are the ones they play on the radio. It would be great if there was a radio station that dared to play other than the most famous songs by an artist. In radio listeners' worlds Led Zeppelin is categorized as Stairway To Heaven. I absolutely love Stairway To Heaven, but (as for almost all older music) I never took the trouble to listen to a complete Led Zeppelin album. I keep myself busy with trying to keep up with the present music scene (in vain, in vain): it's all about choices. But it leads to situations like this: I feel quite ashamed I know nothing of Led Zeppelin except Stairway To Heaven (and the image of the singer with long hair). They're such icons!
The sound of Led Zeppelin is quite unique: quite hard rock with a lot of blues in it…

8 Oct 2008, 4:03 de ReiXMinako1. ayumi hamasaki - It's surprising to me that she's #1 this year, because I always used to hate her music. I guess the problem was that I never gave her a chance. Her music is wonderful. She blends all types of music in perfectly amazing ways. Her voice is something to hear, but it's undoubtedly very powerful and full of spirit. Her lyrics and the honesty she puts forth really connect with me and a lot of people, so that's why she's been my favorite this year.

Happy 62nd Birthday to composer/arranger/bassist/keyboardist/mandolinist...
John Baldwin a/k/a John Paul Jones!

Speaking discographically (is that a real word?), this is the first track where we get to really have a good listen to JPJ's work on the organ.
I'm cheating just a bit, because we get a sneak peek two tracks earlier on You Shook Me between the 2- and 3-minute mark, but it's not until this track where the organ work is both a centerpiece as the opener as well as a key underlying element of the whole song, and really "makes" the track!
In his overall career, not the first notable work where we can catch his contribution...but stay tuned next Wednesday for that!
