Dubstep is awesome. :D Haha, yeah, Sirenia. They're always brought up in these circles when someone complains about a band changing its sound. I couldn't agree more that incorporating outside influences is good, though I don't necessarily enjoy the results. :) We have the same basic principles, only I like more old mixed with new, while you seek more progression and diversification. v LOL. :D True. Though in Leaves' Eyes' case it's the Viking metal cliches - anyway what I really want is gothic music videos that spend more time telling a good story and less time showing the singer; that doesn't necessarily require much budget. Yeah, there's only so much you can do in still photographs, but in video I think there are many more possibilities, if the story is interesting and has more than the one or two plot points that music videos tend to have, dragged out over four minutes.

As for the imagery, I guess it's a matter of budget: few gothic bands have enough money to shoot a really good video, that's probably why you feel the iconography has not fully exlored yet. But personally, as a photographer, I can tell you that after I spent 2009 trying to understand what I was, in 2010 I explored the typial gothic imagery. Well, by 2011 I had already grown tired of it and felt I had explored anything about it. Thus I felt the need to move on and, while retaining a(n often distinctly) murky style, I'm constantly trying new stuff. Today, if you asked me to shoot a young lady in a black-on-black corset and gown in a cemetery, I'd roll my eyes and turn down. Unless it were a payd job, in which case I'd agree for a fee. That's why I can't understand bands that keep doing stuff they've been doing for decades with little, if any, vatiation.

Interesting conversation, indeed. I agree on many things you said and especially praise the part when you say that dubstep wubs and gutar riffs are totally interchangeable, I'm not the only one to think so! :) Anyways, this is a typical example of why I laugh when I read people crying that such bands as Within Temptation, Delain or Nemesea sold out and tried to become commercial. The average rock and metal audience pretentiously consider themselves to be an "élite" who are gifted with a better understanding of music, which results in narrow-mindedness and recalcitrance against anything that's different from the perceived "good music". Given metal will never massively make it to radio stations, it's a much more commercially safe move to stick to the old clichés than try to integrate heterogeneous influences from outside the "niche" (in this case from pop music). But constantly recycling oneself usually results in a Sirenia-like situation.

Yes, the artistic integrity discussion - http://www.last.fm/group/nDroae/forum/139168/_/2188383 I don't think the search for novelty was a part of the motivation for the Imaginaerum film, nor Within Temptation's comics and short films.

I can't deny I would have liked Imaginaerum (album) more if it were more like Once, and I would have liked Meredead more if it were more like any previous album... except for the amazing title track. :3 Yes, symphonic metal itself was already perfected almost a decade ago, gothic metal I can't really comment on, but bands always have a visual element in artwork and music videos, and the latter is what I would like to see perfected with standard iconography, since I'm a filmmaker myself. I'm frustrated that none of the imagery in earlier Nightwish artwork made it into the film, while symphonic metal videos have mostly been extremely sparse on story. I've been working for close to three years on a short film that incorporates sci-fi / science fantasy versions of ghosts, angels (one of each]) and the classic divided lovers motif.

I don't think all of sudden everybody started "trying avoiding" the cliches, to be honest. I think they simply outgrew them and moved on, which is a natural consequence of the artistic growth process, in particular since stuff like that has been around for two decades. And since you mentioned it, I think Nightwish's Imaginaerum does indeed epitomize the death of symphonic metal: they had to turn to something other than music to add any novelty, 'cause the album is pretty much identical to the previous two, which I consider a failure for a musician. But then again, I gave up on Leaves' Eyes because they recorded an album that was virtually identical to the previous three, so why am I even surprised?

Of course it does. For some reason, gothy metal fandom stuff often appeals more to me than bands' actual output, especially music videos and, prominently, Nightwish's Imaginaerum movie. I don't think the cliches have been explored enough yet, because everyone started trying to avoid them before the scene had even reached full strength. The only problem is, this album has a lot to live up to now. :D http://www.last.fm/group/Leaves%27+Eyes/forum/87764/_/1015930/1#f19008998

Liv: "Dear Viking-Metal Fans & Friends, I am very happy to announce that I will be joining Týr for the duet THE LAY OF OUR LOVE on their up-coming album (title still to be revealed), which is set to be released this Fall." That's funny. I missed the Tyr show at ProgPower XI because it was the same time as the Leaves' Eyes signing :D Leaves' Eyes were more annoyed about that than I was.

"'Symphonies of the Night' is hauntingly dream-like and heavy to the core!" I don't even know what to expect, can't even imagine. Meredead was a special project and Njord was a lifetime ago. :D

Presumably the album will have less folk and more symphonic elements, but aside from that, I couldn't guess how it will sound. Meredead was already pretty dark, everyone dies :D The title reminds me of LIV MOON and of course Phantom of the Opera (Music of the Night), but really you might as well call an album "Symphonic Metal," it means the same thing. Could be seen as cliched, but IMO it's perfectly acceptable and fitting to go with a fundamental title like that in this kind of music, because it's a relatively young and small scene whose history is still in the making, and it's always seeking out the ultimate essential possibilities. Note that Nightwish and Within Temptation both backed away from symphonic epics on their last albums, because they felt that they'd reached the crescendo in that direction on their previous works; but Leaves' Eyes hasn't pushed it that far yet, and this ambitious title suggests to me that it's the goal this time.
