Kitchens of Distinction (conocidos también por sus iniciales KOD) fueron una banda de South London, Inglaterra, cuya música abarcaba el rock alternativo y sobre todo el shoegaze. Sus integrantes fueron Dan Goodwin en la batería, Julian Swales en la guitarra y Patrick Fitzgerald en el bajo y la voz.
Su carrera duró de 1986 a 1996 dejando 4 álbums: Love is hell de 1989, Strange Free world de 1991, Cowboys and Aliens de 1994.
Dan Goodwin conoce a Julian Swales en 1980, y Swales conoce a Fitzgerald en una fiesta en 1985. En 1985 empiezan a ensayar tomando el mismo nombre de una compañía encargada de la decoración y reparación de hogares y cocinas.
Su primer sencillo fue «The Last Gasp Death Shuffle» el cual fué grabado en un solo día con Swales en bajo, vocal y guitarras. Fué declarado como sencillo del año por la revista NME y enseguida fueron firmados por la compañía One Little Indian Records, para entonces Patrick Fitzgerald quien entonces era médico decidió dedicarse por completo a la música. Sus primeros sencillos para One Little Indian fueron Prize y The 3rd time we opened the capsule.
En abril de 1989 salé su primer disco Love is Hell, considerado uno de los precursores del sonido estandarte del Shoegaze. Capas de sonido creadas por la guitarra junto con la voz apasionada de Fitzgerald.

When I first moved to London, Julian Swales, who knew a friend of mine, very kindly took me to the cinema. Given that I didn't know anyone, that was an *incredibly* sweet thing to do, which I haven't forgotten. Oh, and KOD were of course, utterly marvellous!
