Junto a Mick Jagger, es uno de los jefes de una de las más famosas bandas de rock and roll del mundo, los Rolling Stones. En un principio, fueron unos puristas del blues, versioneando a los mejores bluesman afroamericanos (Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf…). El grupo fue ganándose un sonido cada vez más contundente y comenzó a componer temas propios junto a Jagger: Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Woman, Under my thumb, Jumping Jack Flash. Pero el album que definitivamente refleja su particular sonido es Exile on Main Street.
Tiene grandes altibajos con la droga a lo largo de su vida. Igual ocurre en su vida amorosa con Anita Pallenberg, la que fue novia de Brian Jones.
Su gran maestro es Chuck Berry, del que ha aprendido sus geniales riffs de guitarra.Le agradeció lo aprendido formando un grupo de acompañamiento de lujo para rodar la excelente película «Hail Hail Rock and Roll».
Es uno de los maestros de la Telecaster, aunque también es habitual verlo con la Gibson 335. Aparece en la última película de Piratas del Caribe como padre de Johnny Depp.
