Kanye es hijo de Ray y Donda West. Ray West trabajaba como periodista fotográfico (llegando a ser premiado) cuando Kanye nació, y actualmente trabaja como consejero matrimonial pastoral. Donta West presidia el Departamento de Inglés de la Universidad de Chicago State, hasta que se retiró para ser el manager de su hijo. Tras asistir a la Academia Internacional de Arte y Diseño y Tecnología, una escuela de bellas artes de Chicago, y más adelante a la Universidad de Chicago, West abandonó todo y dio comienzo a su carrera musical. Ganó fama produciendo a artistas de rap y de R&B como Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, Brandy, Talib Kweli, Dilated Peoples, Ludacris y John Legend. El propio West estuvo trabajando en su álbum en solitario durante un largo periodo, pero el lanzamiento del disco tuvo que ser retrasado en repetidas ocasiones.
West se convirtió en uno de los mejores productores de hip hop tras la grabación del aclamadísimo álbum de Jay-Z The Blueprint, en el que se destacaban cuatro temas producidos por Kanye, el más notable el single principal «Izzo (H.O.V.A.)», y el ‘diss’ a Nas y Prodigy «Takeover». Debido a su aspecto y estilo global, West trabajó duramente para crear su propia voz y estilo musical en sus grabaciones. Jay-Z admitió que Roc-a-Fella Records estaba poco dispuesta a apoyar a West como rapero al principio, ya que le veían como un productor ante todo. Muchas compañías discográficas le dan la espalda por no haber sido un traficante de droga en el pasado y por no vestir la ropa de hip-hop habitual. Él no era por lo tanto comercial en el modo que otros raperos lo eran.
