Judas Iscariot era una banda estadounidense de Black metal, originalmente llamada Heidegger, formada en 1992 como proyecto solista de Andrew Harris, conocido bajo el seudónimo de “Akhenaten”. Sin embargo, con el lanzamiento de Heaven in Flames (1999), Duane Timlin (aka Cryptic Winter) se unió a la banda como baterista de sesión. Entre 1999 y 2000, Akhenaten hizo dos conciertos en vivo con una formación que ofrecía miembros de Nargaroth, Krieg, Absu y Manic Butcher. Los temas que tocaban comunmente eran dirigidos, a menudo, contra la religión y ahondaban en una fascinación con la filosofía nihilista. Después de volver de Alemania, Akhenaten anunció el fallecimiento de Judas Iscariot el 25 de agosto de 2002. Intencionalmente o no, esta fecha coincidió con el 102 aniversario de la muerte del filósofo alemán Friedrich Nietzsche, cuyo trabajo fue citado como importante influencia ideológica de la banda.
