  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (11-22-09)

    25 Nov 2009, 2:06 de Carpetbagger513

    Last.fm Top Artists
If anything cam be taken from this week’s charts, it’s that The 9513 fans are not beholden to pop culture and the media to dictate their listening habits. Either that, or no one’s gotten the memo that Taylor and Carrie are the biggest things in country music right now. Probably the former, though. For the second straight week, Miranda Lambert is the #1 artist, with 32 listeners, leaving the rest of the group in the dust. Carrie “Hot Pants” Underwood comes in at #3 with 25 listeners, along with Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash and Brad Paisley. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, finished with 22 listeners, leaving her at #11 along with Dwight Yoakam. Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and Gloriana, the other big country winners at last night’s American Music Awards, had 17, 13 and 10 listeners, good for #27, #42 and #79, respectively. We’re so counterculture. Speaking of, Ryan Adams led the Americana artists with 14 listeners, with Hayes Carll and Rosanne Cash with 13.

    Last.fm Top Albums
The triumvirate of Underwood, Swift and Lambert had six of the 13 albums in the Top 10, with Revolution at #1 (22 listeners), Carnival Ride at #2 (18) and Fearless at #3 (15). Two new releases, Underwood’s Play On and Tim McGraw’s Southern Voice (11) came in at #7. Terri Clark made it to #10 with The Long Way Home (10). Those close-but-not-quite-Top 10 albums included Darius Rucker’s Learn to Live, Gretchen Wilson’s Here For The Party and Eric Chuch’s Carolina. Right at the bottom of the list, mixed in with some very good albums, there is Kristy Lee Cook’s Why Wait, with 5 listeners. I guess it’s a testament to the album that two years removed from being the designated country castoff from American Idol, she’s still getting listeners. I just don’t want to see any of you all putting Danny Gokey’s country album on the charts, okay?

    Last.fm Top Tracks
Lambert’s “Time To Get A Gun” and Lady Antebellum’s “EscucharNeed You Now” both had 10 listeners to lead the way, with David Nail’s “EscucharRed Light” had 9 to be at #3. After that, it’s a barrage of Underwood and Lambert tracks, with only a handful of male singers getting any significant showings at all. Paisley’s new single, “EscucharAmerican Saturday Night” had 7 listeners, as did the Garth Brooks classic “EscucharFriends in Low Places.” Reba McEntire had 8 listeners for “Consider Me Gone,” and Gloriana had 7 for “EscucharWild At Heart” to lead the way for the other female/female-dominant acts.

    Billboard Country Singles
After a week at #1, Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” falls back a spot, making way for “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum. Those two relatively new acts will have to compete with McEntire, who’s got her hottest single in years with “Consider Me Gone.” It moves up to #4.Craig Morgan’s “EscucharBonfire,” for whatever reason, is one of the hottest songs on the chart, moving from #10 to #6. Maybe you have to be from the backwoods, hicktown, small town USA to appreciate it. The next batch of singles are already making their way up the charts, as Paisley’s “American Saturday Night” jumps from #41 to #30, Urban’s “’Til Summer Comes Around” debuts at #41, and Zac Brown Band debuts at #54 with “Highway 20 Ride.”

    Americana Music Association Chart
Cash’s The List pushes its way to #1 this week, with 520 spins putting it almost 100 ahead of its closest competitor, Robert Earl Keen’s The Rose Hotel. The biggest gainers were Chip Taylor’s Yonkers NY, which moved from #19 to #14, and Chuck Prophet’s Let Freedom Ring, moving from #24 to #15. The only debut for the week was singer/stone mason (seriously, check his Web site) Kevin Deal, who starts at #38 with 7 Seven. David Rawlings Machine had 13 adds for A Friend Of A Friend, so it’s likely to have a strong run on the chart when it gets released.

    Freebie Of The Week
If you’ve never spent time at the Live Music Archive at www.archive.org, you really need to. It features more than 70,000 full-length concerts, all legally available with the artists’ permission. The sound quality isn’t always perfect, depending on how the concert is recorded (occasionally you can get one recorded directly from the sound board), but you can easily lose a day or three checking around the site. Just through a few minutes of perusal, I found Corb Lund covering “Seven Spanish Angels.” He did a killer version of this when I saw him live, so I’m glad to have a version of my own. The quality is outstanding, too. Check it out here (http://www.archive.org/details/corblund2006-11-30.sbd.flac) and have fun exploring.

  • Guitar update - There's No Depression in Guitar Land - new Song

    24 Nov 2009, 13:35 de ACKthehack

So, I am all over the place with my guitar playing. Real life has come crushing into my free time with work duties and such. Plus there was a keen moment of realization in terms of my limits in playing that sent me back for a quick turn when it comes to the timing of walk-ups and walk-downs and bass rolls for a song I recorded but removed from MySound Click page called "Bury Me Beneath the Willow Tree" usually I pick the most raw unadorned version of a song to clue off of like Woody Guthrie's version but I have to be honest my favorite version of it right now is the Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs bluegrass version which is just really incredible.

My problem was that my timing was completely off I was starting the walk-up on the wrong beat all together. And I was doing this for every song I did a bass roll, walk-up or walk-down on and I had learned my mistake really well. Oh I was very good at fucking this up and unlearning it has been a bitch that has absorbed way too much of my free time on the guitar.

This did not mean I stopped learning new songs all together though I have been rotating during my practice around "Red River Valley" which I really do like the Woody Guthrie version best btw. Also for the kids I learned "Wheels on the Bus" and "I've Been Working on the Railroad" which Johnny Cash did a weird haunting version of the song. Freaky I found it on youtube sometime ago.

It made me want to learn "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain". I know the chords but I am not happy with the sound I am getting on the strum. I found a cool little basic fingerpicking lesson for the song. He does alternating bass on the thumb and then hits all three higher strings at the same time and I kind of like the sound.

My family and I will be going to New York for Thanksgiving holiday but when I get back I am going to dig into that one I need another fingerpicking song to work on anyway.

Funny thing is I am finding it very hard to find the time to work on lessons from the second DVD of the "Acoustic Guitar Method" by David Hamburger and I feel like I really need to return back to it to keep the progression of my skills up.

All of this put together has got me thinking about adding one of the "Old Town School of Folk Music" CDs to my list for Christmas but I cannot really decide which one I want.

There is one song I have been learning I finally decided to record. Its the song I guess in a sense starting me back listening to modern style country in the first place. Yes I am talking about Uncle Tupelo and the song is "No Depression". Its such a perfect song for the times but at the same time also gave me a great workout in the intro for my timing issues with walk-ups and walk-downs too.

    Me playing - No Depression

  • Johnny Cash - Hurt (Traduccion)

    11 Nov 2009, 19:50 de themusicxuby

Me hiero a mí mismo hoy
    para ver si aún siento,
    me concentro en el dolor
la única cosa que es real.
    La aguja perfora un orificio,
    el viejo pinchazo familiar
    trata de matarlo todo
pero yo recuerdo todas las cosas.

    ¿En qué me he convertido?
    Mi más dulce amigo,
    cada persona que conozco
    se aleja al final.
    Pudiste tener todo
    mi imperio de impureza,
    te defraudaré
    y te lastimaré.

    Uso mi corona de mierda
    en mi trono de embustero
    lleno de pensamientos rotos
    que no puedo reparar.
    Bajo la mancha del tiempo
    el sentimiento desaparece,
    eres alguien más
    y yo aún estoy aquí.

    ¿En qué me he convertido?
    Mi más dulce amigo,
    cada persona que conozco
    se aleja al final.
    Pudiste tener todo
    mi imperio de impureza,
    te defraudaré
    y te lastimaré.

    Si pudiera empezar nuevamente
a un millón de millas de aquí
    me conservaría a mí mismo…
    encontraría un camino…

  • Johnny Cash - Hurt

    11 Nov 2009, 19:21 de themusicxuby

    I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    The only thing that's real
    The needle tears a hold
    The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
    But I remember everything

    Chorus:
    What have I become
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know goes away
    In the end

And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt

    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
    Upon my liar's chair
    Full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    Beneath the stains of time
    The feelings disappear
    You are someone else
    I am still right here

    Chorus:
    What have I become
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know goes away
    In the end

And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt

    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt
    If I could start again

    A million miles away
    I would keep myself
    I would find a way

  • Kris Kristofferson, Gothenburg, July 31 2008

Kris Kristofferson, Trägårn Gothenburg, July 31 2008

One of the greatest songwriters and one of the few true country legends still around. A 72 year old man alone on stage with a guitar and harmonica singing his songs. Nothing more nothing less... Like with Johnny Cash and Porter Wagoner's last album his age is showing in his voice but in a good way. It adds even more character to his voice.

It started a little so-so for the first song or two but as soon as he got warm it turned into a very captivating concert.EscucharMe And Bobby McGee, EscucharTo Beat The Devil, EscucharHelp Me Make It Through The Night, EscucharCasey's Last Ride, EscucharThe Silver Tongued Devil And I, EscucharThe Pilgrim, EscucharThis Old Road and EscucharSunday Mornin' Comin' Down are just a few of the highlights of the 30-something songs played this evening.

He seems to really enjoy playing and keeps telling jokes in between songs, he didn't tell as many stories as he did the last time I saw him though but with that many songs played who's complaining... It would be interesting to see him with a small band behind him next time though.
