Doesn't it seem that The Great Compromise is a Great allegory going beyond the obvious story to describe Prine's thoughts concerning the USA at the time? I.E the woman in the story is symbolic of the U.S., the man a soldier who served her. Also consider the peace movement and the drafted pacifists crossing into Canada and how they couldn't come back home afterward. Any thoughts?

Love John Prine. I never once heard an LP or CD that didn't have at least 2 great songs. He can make me laugh and cry ... sometimes in the same song. Must see him on stage. Love his duet with Dolores Keane on "In Spite of Ourselves" CD. Hard to pick a favorite, but "The Missing Years" is an absolute classic.
