John Winston Lennon Stanley (Liverpool, Reino Unido, 9 de octubre de 1940 - † Nueva York, Estados Unidos, 8 de diciembre de 1980) fue un músico y compositor británico. Integrante y fundador del grupo The Beatles, donde tocaba la guitarra, cantaba y componía gran parte del material junto a su compañero Paul McCartney, Lennon ha compuesto algunas de las melodías más conocidas del siglo XX.
Nacido durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, su padre era un marino, Alfred Lennon, y su madre era Julia Stanley. Como su padre viajaba mucho, Julia se sentía sola, así que terminaron por divorciarse. Cuando John tenía cuatro años su madre lo dejó con su tía Mimi Stanley y su tío George.
En la escuela de Bellas Artes conoció a Cynthia Powell, que con el tiempo sería su primera esposa. Antes de formar los Beatles estuvo en las bandas The Quarrymen, Johnny & The Moondogs y John & The Silver Beetles, en las que se hacía acompañar por sus amigos de la escuela, entre ellos Stuart Sutcliffe. También fue él quien ideó el nombre «The Beatles», que, según dijo públicamente, se le ocurrió a la hora de asemejar «Beetles» con la palabra «Beat» (ya que la música que querían hacer se denominaba «beat music»). El nombre del grupo evolucionó de «John & The Silver Beetles» a «John Silver & The Beatles» y, de ahí y después de la transformación de la palabra «beetles», pasó a llamarse simplemente «The Beatles».
