Review: Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
18 Nov 2009, 6:23 de perpetualcacoph
To those of you that have heard of Sunn O))) before, you will probably know exactly what to expect out of their latest release, Monoliths & Dimensions. This is another album filled to the brim with dark, brooding atmosphere that is meant to be played at deafening volumes. With this album, Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson collaborated with eighteen other musicians in order to make their most ambitious album to date. Guests include Dylan Carlson (Earth), Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Burial Chamber Trio), Oren Ambarchi, Julian Priester (Sun Ra, John Coltrane), an upright bass quartet, two choirs, and even some horns make an appearance.
The album opens with Aghartha (a reference to jazz legend Miles Davis), a seventeen minute track which begins the same way most Sunn O))) songs do: a low, droning guitar and bass duo. Most of this track is centered around Attila Csihar’s spoken vocals that go throughout the song. The song continually builds towards a climax by adding in low piano and screeching strings. The effect is both beautiful and terrifying. Aghartha could easily be the heaviest work Sunn O))) has ever done. The amount of bass in the recording has made me dizzy a few times while listening with headphones. The combination of the droning guitars, the haunting vocals, and the ambient effects strewn throughout the song make for a masterpiece of experimental drone.
Big Church [megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért] begins with the sound of an almost angelic choir. The contrast between this and the end of the previous song is sure to grab the listener’s attention. This song epitomizes the core concept of the entire album. This is Sunn O))) showing the musicality that is present in all of their other songs by adding additional instruments which showcase those elements. The juxtaposition of the beautiful choirs against the discordant guitar work is simply amazing. There are no words to faithfully describe the awesomeness of this track. A quick side note: The long word in the title of this song is a Hungarian compound word that was used during the inquisition as a sentencing for heretics. It roughly translates to “you’re desacralized because of your own actions, that you brought upon yourself, to the point that it’s impossible to be sacred again”.
We then move on to Hunting and Gathering (Cydonia). This is another song where Csihar shines. Right at the start he is growling over a very heavy, very Earth-esque riff. Further in, we hear the horns really being featured for the first time. The sound is massive and intense. The song begins to take on an almost tribal feeling as more auxiliary percussion is added and the horns take a back seat to Csihar again. After a climax, synthesizers are introduced with occasional horn fanfares interrupting. The synths give this track a surreal feeling to the whole song. This is probably the weakest track on the album, but it is by no means a bad one.
Finally, we arrive at the track Alice (a reference to Alice Coltrane). The guitar work here has the twangy/dirty tone that Dylan Carlson has been fond of lately, and the first portion of the song has Carlson playing a slow riff over a ringing bass. Slowly, horn swells appear in order to accent the changes in the riff and a trombone solo begins over the top of everything. This song sounds simple and consonant compared to the rest of the album, and even takes on the sound of a modern jazz piece towards the end with extensive cymbal work and a harp providing harmony behind the trombone. It’s truly beautiful and it creates a pleasing end to an amazing album.
Overall, Monoliths & Dimensions is a contender for Sunn O)))’s best album to date. The progress shown between their debut album, The Grimmrobe Demos, and what they have just released ten years later is astounding. They’re addition of elements from jazz and classical music makes this a more pleasant listening experience than the blackened sound of Black One, and it will probably be much more accessible than their previous releases. That said, if you didn’t like this band before you will probably not enjoy this album, but for fans of experimental music this is an amazing album that is well worth the money.

30 Questions About My Top 30
26 Oct 2009, 6:18 de MisterJunior
I'm a sucker for a good (or bad) survey, so here's another...
1. How did you get into 29?
The Beatles: Hard to say. I remember my mom playing some Beatles stuff when I was younger but I didn't really listen to them very much again until I was probably 18 or 19.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
The Band: I'm sure it was either "The Weight" or "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Dead Kennedys: All of them except the live archival stuff they've put out recently.
4. What is your favorite song by 15?
Dead Can Dance: I'll say "Black Sun" because I guess technically "How Fortunate the Man with None" is a cover of sorts.
5. What is your favorite song by 5?
John Coltrane: I like "Alabama" a lot. "Equinox" is great too. I'll say "Alabama," though.
6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Johann Sebastian Bach: Lots, but I'll be predictable and say the "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" movement of Cantata 147.
7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Neil Young: "Cowgirl in the Sand."
8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
The Velvet Underground: I can't really think of anything specific.
9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Madvillain: The whole Madvillainy album makes me happy. I'd be even happier if they ever put out the proper follow-up to it.
10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
Steely Dan: Never! I would love to see them live, though.
12. What is your favorite album by 11?
The Rolling Stones: The four from Beggars Banquet to Exile on Main St. are all equally awesome, I think... but in the past couple years my favorite has been The Rolling Stones, Now!.
13. What is your favorite song by 1?
Thelonious Monk: I'll say "Bemsha Swing."
14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Misfits: No. I'm not old enough to have seen them when they were together, and I don't consider the current band to be the same Misfits.
15. What is a good memory involving 27?
The Jesus Lizard: Check back with me in November, when I hope to have seen them live.
16. What is your favorite song by 16?
The Fall: That's like asking a parent to name their favorite child. If I had a gun to my head I would say "Garden."
17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Morphine: Probably Cure for Pain, but The Night has really grown on me lately.
18. What is your favorite song by 21?
Pixies: "Motorway to Roswell."
19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Carl Orff: "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana.
20. What is your favorite album by 2?
Ludwig van Beethoven: He pre-dates the idea of "albums," so I'll skip this one.
21. What is you favorite song by 3?
Tom Waits: "All the World is Green."
22. What is you favorite song by 8?
Cows: Again, this is very difficult. I'll say "Cabin Man," although I've likely perjured myself since I think I said "The Man" in another survey.
23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Minutemen: None.
24. What is the worst song by 12?
Bill Evans: I haven't heard anywhere close to everything he ever recorded, but it's tough for me to think of a bad song of his that I have heard.
25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: "Red Right Hand," which pops up randomly in Dumb & Dumber.
26. What is you favorite album by 7?
Ramones: The debut. I'd put it in my top 3 albums of all time.
27. What is your favorite song by 24?
The Clash: "Straight to Hell."
28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Lou Reed: "Walk on the Wild Side" makes me kind of happy. If I could include "Sweet Jane" that would be my choice.
29. What is your favorite album by 4?
NoMeansNo: 0+2=1.
30. How many albums do you own by 20?
Fugazi: All of them except the "Furniture" single. -

quando falamos de letra, a intenção do compositor pode ajudar a compreender melhor a obra, evitando assim que a música ser entendida totalmente do avesso. se tratando de letra, tudo fica muito mais sensível;
A Love Supreme
I will do all I can to be worthy of Thee O Lord.
It all has to do with it.
Thank you God.
Peace.
There is none other.
God is. It is so beautiful.
Thank you God. God is all.
Help us to resolve our fears and weaknesses.
Thank you God.
In You all things are possible.
We know. God made us so.
Keep your eye on God.
God is. He always was. He always will be.
No matter what…it is God.
He is gracious and merciful.
It is most important that I know Thee.
Words, sounds, speech, men, memory, thoughts,
fears and emotions — time all related…
all made from one…all made in one.
Blessed be His name.
Thought waves — heat waves-all vibrations –
all paths lead to God. Thank you God.
His way…it is so lovely…it is gracious.
It is merciful — thank you God.
One though can produce millions of vibrations
and they all go back to God…everything does.
Thank you God.
Have no fear…believe…thank you God.
The universe has many wonders. God is all.
His way…it is so wonderful.
Thoughts–deeds–vibrations, etc.
They all go back to God and He cleanses all.
He is gracious and merciful…thank you God.
Glory to God…God is so alive.
God is.
God loves.
May I be acceptable in Thy sight.
We are all one in His grace.
The fact that we do exist is acknowledgement
of Thee O Lord.
Thank you God.
God will wash away all our tears…
He always has…
He always will.
Seek Him everyday. In all ways seek God everyday.
Let us sing all songs to God.
To whoma all praise is due…praise God.
No road is an easy one, but they all
go back to God.
With all we share God.
It is all with God.
It is all with Thee.
Obey the Lord.
Blessed is He.
We are from one thing…the will of God…
thank you God.
I have seen Godd–I have seen ungodly–
none can be greater–none can compare to God.
Thank you God.
He will remake us…He always has and He
always will.
It is true–blessed be His name–thank you God.
God breathes through us so completely…
so gently we hardly feel it…yet,
it is our everything.
Thank you God.
ELATION–ELEGANCE–EXALTATION–
All from God.
Thank you God. Amen.
ps: acho minor threat muito foda.
