Jimi Hendrix es considerado un verdadero genio. Su personalidad va más allá de la música, incidiendo en una peculiar visión filosófico-social- drogadíctica del mundo, visión que se integra en su personalísima e inigualable capacidad creativa.
Poseía un especial dominio de la guitarra eléctrica en la cual expresaba con una increíble destreza sus emociones. En 2003, la revista Rolling Stone lo reconoció como el mejor guitarrista de todos los tiempos.

Gran admirador y estudioso del blues, lo revolucionó de tal manera que creo un estilo posteriormente imitado hasta la saciedad. Su primera banda de cierta entidad fue la del cantante de rock and roll Little Richard, donde no se le permitia excesiva libertad.
No lograria emanciparse musicalmente hasta que formó su propia banda:The Jimi Hendrix Experience, junto a Mitch Mitchell a la batería y Noel Redding al bajo.
El éxito le llegaría con una gira inglesa en 1966, promovida por el bajista de The animals,Chas Chandler.Allí se convirtió en artista de culto y despertó la admiración de toda la vanguardia musical del momento:
the beatles,the rolling stones,the who,cream,etc.
Su primer single importante fue «hey joe».En 1967 aparecería el album «Are you experienced?», que le consagraría definitivamente.
Le seguiría en 1968 «Electric ladyland».Para entonces, con The Experience habia grabado canciones tan importantes para la historia de la música como «purple haze»,»fire»,»voodo child» o la versión de Dylan «all along the watchtower».
