Jay and the Americans, uno de los grupos vocales más populares de la década de los 60.El grupo lo creó John Trainor, quien había colaborado a finales de los 50 con los Mystics. Después creó su propio grupo, The Harbor Lights, con Howard Kirshenbaum, Kenny Rosenberg y Sandy Yaguda.Pero este cuarteto de Brooklyn tuvo un corto recorrido, pues sólo editó dos singles durante el año 1960. En 1962 el grupo es descubierto por los compositores y productores, Jerry Leiber y Mike Stoller, quienes les cambian el nombre y les procuran un contrato con U.Artists. En este sello Jay(John Traynor) & the Americans editaron en 1962 su primer single. En este, hicieron una revisión de un tema de la banda sonora de West Side Story:»Tonight», una composición de Leonard Bernstein. Pero, fué en el segundo single cuando el grupo logró el ansiado éxito .»She Cried»,que en el prensage original del single se editó como cara B, fué impulsada por algunos D.J. con buen oido, que se encargaron
de convertirlo en un un gran éxito( nº5). Después de algunas ediciones de singles, que pasaron ,casi, desapercibidos, Jay Trainor dejó el grupo para iniciar una carrera en solitario, que dicho sea de paso, no le fué demasiado bién.Escucharemos en el programa algún tema de esta época de Traynor.
