I always wondered to myself, what constitutes a great song? The notion of such a thing is a heated one, I'd say closely related to a debate on religion. It's personal. Everyone has a different opinion on what music is, whether they have musical training or not. Some think music constitutes of solely a good beat, a good melody or even a combination of factors. To me, this is how I find my music:

- Melody: This may be my piano training coming in here, but I can't listen to a song if it hasn't got a good melody that sounds musical. No offence to anyone who listens to hip-hop, but it's the reason why I don't listen to too much of it. To me a good melody to me consists of a variety of leaps and jumps, and coupled with some great harmonies. I can't resist a harmony, haha.
- The Voice: The voice has to have a quality that is raw and authentic. Now that's hard these days with artists opting for the Auto-Tune, but I know there are a few artists who don't rely on Auto-Tune. I'd say artists like
Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz and other artists of similar nature do present a very authentic and very raw vocal quality. You may disagree with me, but hey as I said everyone has a different opinion of music. Although you might consider this next artist just a generic pop artist, but Delta Goodrem really has an extremely nice vocal quality to her.
- Lyrics: Again, like the voice, to me the lyrics in a song has to present a raw and authentic emotion. Too often we're stuck with cliched pop music lyrics, all talking about the same thing. I'll take Sara Bareilles' song Gravity as an example. The voice combined with the lyrics give me an emotion that I can sympathise and take on. I'm not saying there are no mainstream pop songs that do the same thing, there are plenty. But too often manufactured songs to me seem to take precedence over raw and authentic music.

Well that's just my opinion on what qualities I find in music.

So, some people complain about the comparisons that Last.fm makes. Well check this out. Here are a few ridiculous comparisons Pandora made. I don't know if they changed them yet or not, but here are a few that I've seen. I'll add more. Feel free to contribute, if you've noticed anything like this on Pandora.

Any nu-metal, and a other types are compared to Slipknot, Korn or Mudvayne
Any female fronted gothic/symphonic is compared to Within Temptation and Nightwish
Most hard rock bands compared to Breaking Benjamin
And thrash metal compared to Metallica or Megadeth
And female fronted pop-country compared to Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood
