Immolation es una banda de death metal de Yonkers, Nueva York. La banda fue formada en Mayo de 1986 por Andrew Sakowicz (bajo, voz) y Dave Wilkinson (bateria) como Rigor Mortis. El nombre fue cambiado a Immolation en Abril de 1988. La banda tenia un acuerdo con Roadrunner Records y lanzo su album debut Dawn of Possesion con ellos. Ellos fueron despedidos cuando la marca casi se deshizo de todas las bandas de death metal.
Despues firmaron para Metal Blade Records y lanzaron sus tres siguientes albumes con ellos. Despues del segundo album, Here In After, el baterista Craig Smilowski deja la banda y fue reemplazado por Alex Hernandez. Los dos albumes mas recientes fueron lanzados por Listenable Records, la misma marca que lanzo un album para Fallen Christ, la anterior banda de Alex Hernandez. Unholy Cult vio la salida del guitarrista Thomas Wilkinson. Steve Shalaty reemplazo a Hernandez en Harnessing Ruin. Immolation utiliza riffs escritos en patrones harmonicos disonantes, a menudo en duelo entre las dos guitarras, para progresar canciones, tipicamente sobre un ritmo complejo y patrones complejos de bateria. Las partes de bateria son a menudo escritas para seguir los riffs de guitarra en un modo que es inusual en el death metal. Ellos y la banda neoyorquina de death metal, Suffocation, ayudaron a la escena neoyorquina de death metal a darle atencion a la musica underground de ese lugar. Sus letras son casi por completo anti-religiosas, especialmente contra la cristiandad.
