Huey Lewis and The News fue una banda de bar a la que le fue bien. Con un rock and roll simple y directo e inspirados en las bandas de bar inglesas y en la música de los 60, la banda originaria de San Francisco se convirtió en uno de los grupos más notorios de los ochenta.
Con canciones como «Workin’ for a Livin’,» «I Want a New Drug,» «The Heart of Rock & Roll,» «Hip to Be Square» y «The Power of Love» se convirtieron en el ícono cultural de los yuppies por sus letras que ensalzaban la realidad de los trabajadores de oficina y sus aficiones deportivas.
A medida que los ochenta avanzaban las letras se hacían más sencillas para acercarse a un público más viejo que decidió adoptarlos, pero al inicio de los 90 la fórmula mágica se había acabado. Sin embargo, el grupo se mantuvo como un espectáculo digno de ser visto y con una producción que regularmente llegó a las estaciones del adulto contemporáneo.
Las raíces de la banda están en el grupo Cover. Una formación country que formaron Lewis (Joeish Hugh Cregg III) y el tecladista Sean Hopper al regreso de Lewis de un viaje de mochilero por Europa en 1972.
El número fue descubierto por un productor inglés, Nick Lowe, en un club nocturno californiano en 1976. Lowe tenía la idea de que el grupo podía ser un suceso en los bares ingleses. Ahí lograron una pequeña audiencia cautiva y, a partir de ese éxito, intentaron con un primer sencillo «Chicken Funk» en el que Lewis hacía la voz principal. Al año siguiente la banda menos Lewis hizo de soporte para Elvis Costello en la grabación del álbum debut del artista.
